Receives Promotion
Former Ashland
Man Is Promoted
William B. Westfall, for
mer Ashland resident, com
mander of the 3537th Navi
gator Training Squadron at
Mather Air Force base, Calif.,
has been promoted to colonel.
Westfall received his first
promotion at Mather in 1942
when he graduated from the
advanced pilot training school
here and was commissioned a
second lieutenant.
Colonel Westfall moved to
Mather for the second time
as a lieutenant colonel in 1059
when he took the post of Wing
executive officer. Previous to
this assignment he command
ed the 3610th Navigator Train
ing Squadron (flying support)
at Harlinton Air Force base,
Tex. His present assignment
Is commander of the 3537th
Navigator Training Squadron
(flying support) at Mather.
During World War II, Colo
nel Westfall was stationed in
India where he made 110
flights over the "hump run"
to China. From 1954 to 1956
he was stationed in Dhahran,
Saudi-Arabia, where he com
manded the 7244th Air Base
Squadron. He was assigned to
Harllngen in 195". A com
mand pilot, Colonel Westfall
Was promoted to his present
rank March 15.
The colonel attended Ash
land High school, Ashland,
Ore., and Southern Oregon
college. He earned his bach
elor's degree from the Uni
versity of California in 1950.
He also is a graduate of the
Air Force Command and Staff
school.
Summer Workshop
On Shakespeare Set
Yreka A third summer
workshop for atudy of the
Oregon Shakespeare Festival
plays at Ashland, Ore., will
be held by Chico State college
in cooperation with the Siski
you county schools.
The two-week post session
workshop will be held in Yre
ka and the class members will
attend four evening perform
ances of the Shakespearean
Festival. The class will study
eAh play before seeing it and
dscuss it after each per
formance. Plays to be studied are
"The Comedy of Errors,"
"Henry IV," Part II, "As You
Like H" and "Corlolanus."
Faculty members will be
Dr. Hugh M. Bell, Dr.
Charles S. Fclvcr and Dr.
Arthur Solomon, all of Chico
State college.
A special feature of the
summer course will be an op
portunity to learn and parlict
pate in singing Elizabethan
Madrigals under Mr. and Mrs
Max Williamson, music in
structors in the Chico school
syslcm.

Oregon Will Get
Job Training Grant

ting a $':85,000 a year grant
from the U.S. government for
vocational training of the Job
less, the Oregon Education
Department has announced.
Dr. Leon P. Minear, state
superintendent of public in
struction, said the money is
being given jointly to the
Education Department and to
the Oregon Labor Bureau.
The grant, under the 19B2
Congressional Manpower and
Training Act, will provide
$300 a year per person to
about 250 individuals in need
of qualifications for specific
Job training. Minear said.
In the first two years, the
act pays 100 per cent of the
cost. After two years, the
state and local communities
must match funds on a 50-50
basis.
Priority In selecting those
to be trained will be given to
those presently unemployed,
and to the heads of fiimllics.
