Stathos Says Workmen's
Compensation Law Needs
Legislative Attention
State Senate candidate Don
Stathoi told an audience
Thursday night that revision
of the Workmen's Compensa
tion Law must be a major
Item of business at the next
session of the state legislature.
"At present, 39 per cent of
the domestic labor force in
Oregon is not protected by
this law," Stathos pointed out
at a dinner meeting of the
Talent Lions club.
He suggested three improve
ments to the 1913 law which
he described as "providing
medical care and weekly in
come to a wage earner in haz
ardous employment who is
Injured on the Job, regardless
of fault."
Benefiti Extended
"The benefits of the Work
men's Compensation Law
should be extended to virtu
ally all Oregon workers and
employers alike. In addition
a wage earner should be able
to appeal his award without
entering into time-consuming
and costly legal expense,'
Stathos said. He advocated the
appeal system used by 43 oth
er states under which 99 per
cent of all claims are satisfied
without litigation.
