New Forest Service Park on
Applegate River Developed
By MS.UDE ZIEGLER
Mail Tribune Correspondent
Applegate Valley - A new
forest service park, known as
the Jackson park located on
the Applegate river a mile
south of McKee bridge, is be
ing developed by a forest
service crew, and basic facil
ities are available now to
early spring picnicers.
Driveways have been made
through the area which is lo
cated on both sides of the riv
er. The west side grounds are
in two tracts. Sanitary facili
ties have been installed, a
few rustic picnic tables placed
and scenic pathways to a
swimming area and other
areas have been built.
E. A. Adams of this commu
nity is superintendent of Jack
son park and other local for
estry parks at Wrangle Gap,
Cook and Green, Hutton, Bea
ver Sulphur, and Thompson
creek.
As funds are made avail
able, fireplaces w ill be built
at Jackson later in the sen
son. A total of 28 picnic ta
bles will be added, and safe
ty, traffic and regulation signs
will be erected. Poison oak
eradication also is a future
project, Neil Suttell, district
ranger, explained.
Jackson park consists of 40
acres, and formerly was the
Gebhart mining property ac
quired by Jackson county and
turned over to the forest serv
ice. The setting is picturesque
in that the park is located in
Chinese mining tailings of a
century ago and massive
mounds of rocks cover the
area. At some future time the
forest service plans to main
tain an exhibit of early day
relics on the grounds.
During the summer, a farm
ers' irrigation dam marks the
lower end of the swimming
hole and adds to the beauty
of the spot. Superintendent
Adams said the place has been
popular with recreationists in
summers past even without fa
cilities of any kind.
Road Conitruction
Road construction at Jack
son was done by the Medford
forest service road crew and
directed by Pete Gregory. Ov
erall supervision of the de
velopment is under the di
rection of Robert Webb and
Robert Snoich of Star Ranger
station.
Suttell explained that site
plans have been completed for
new camp grounds on 'Stoves
Fork of Carbury and at. China
Flat, where trailers and tents
will be permissible.
Site plans also are being
prepared to bring up to date
all present camp grounds ol
the Applegate district. Eefore
aplying for funds for the pio
jects, the site plans must be
approved at the regional of
fice in Portland, Suttell said.
