Self-Sealing Asphalt Shingles Latest
Development To Lessen Wind Damage
Designs Changing For Insulations
Homeowners have more
than a fighting chance against
the havoc caused by high
wind storms, hurricanes, tor
nadoes and cyclones that are
sure to hit many areas of the
United States in years to
come.
Since few section of the
country are completely safe
from major storms, authori
ties are convinced that mil
lions of dollars in damage and
a great deal of family hard
ship could be avoided each
year if more homes were pro
tected by wind-resistant roof
ing. There are cases on records
where entire roof assemblies
have been torn from houses
and later found with asphalt
shingles still firmly in place.
Asphalt Shingles
A leading roofing manu
facturer. The Rubcroid Co.,
recommends the application
of Self-Sealing asphalt shin
gles, the latest development
in roofing to minimize wind
damage. A special thermo
plastic sealing agent along
the tabs of the shingle Is ac
tivated by heat of the sun
after the roofing has been In
stalled.
This sealing action actually
fuses shingles together to
form what is, in effect, a one
piece roof that is highly re
sistant to wind and weather.
Prolonged shingle life is as
sured by numerous drainage
spaces between the sealing
points. These allow escape of
the condensed moisture that
inevitably appears beneath
any roof shingle.
Shortens Life
Trapped moisture shortens
roof life by attacking both
shingle and underlay materi
al, by expanding into ice for
mulations that weakens shin
gles and loosens nails.
The speed of the sealing
action depends upon prevail
ing temperatures. In summer,
bonding begins immediately.
In spring and fall, several '
days may be required. Once
the sun has done its job, how
ever, each Self-Sealing shin
gle is sealed down to stay.
Homeowners, who are con
templating new roofs, should
also consider asbestos-cement
roofing shingles for economy,
Many Boat Types Reflected at Show
The growing production of
multi-hulled craft of various
types was reflected by the
large display of sailing and
power catamarans and trim
arans at the recent National
Motor Boat Show In New
York. These ranged up to 20
feet in length and featured
many readily convertible and
"car top" models.
Largest was the 20-foot
Power Cat 2,000. built of fi
breglass and outboard pow
ered. A 17 - foot 6-inch trim
aran with a beam of 8 feet
carries 100 square feet of sail
and may also take outboard
power.
Other catamarans that can
be sailed or converted into
power craft include the 12
foot fiberglass Aqua-Cat with
aluminum members and
weighing 115 pounds. A speed
of IB knots under sail is
claimed and the craft can be
converted into a runabout by
installation of a motor mount.
A 9-foot 10-inch Seaman Wa
ter Cat weighs less than 60
pounds, is built for outboard
power but can be converted
into a sailing craft with a kit
offered as an extra. A DC-14
catamaran is being marketed
as a one - design class. This
carries 100 square feet of sail
on her lateen rig. She can be
changed into a power catama
ran and carry outbord motor
up to 7'4 h.p.
Aluma Craft has brought
out a new S-12 catamaran
type sailing craft, and George
town Yacht Basin features
the Cougar catamaran, a 17
footer available in either ply
wood or fiberglass hulls. The
boat carries 183 square feet
of sail and has been clocked
at speeds of over 20 knots.
The Berg, 12-foot Midget-Cat,
which seats four persons, has
a beam of 5 - feet 3 - inches,
carries 80 square feet of sail
and Is rated at 10 knots.

The nation's recreational
boat owners will find addi
tional cruising room this year
through the ever-expanding
waterways created by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers. The
sailing and cruising public in
some 38 states gained 23,000
miles of shoreline in 1961 as
more than 3,000,000 acres of
water surface were added
through the approximately
200 navigation, flood control
or multiple purpose projects
operated by the Corps of En
gineers. An additional 1,300 miles
miles of shoreline are expect
ed to be added by projects
in Vermont, Pennsylvania,
Connecticut, Massachusetts,
California, Oklahoma, Mis
souri, Kansas, Oregon, Wash
ington, Georgia and South
Carolina.
The vast interest of the
boating public in-these man
made waterways is demon
strated by the fact that from
an estimated 5,000,000 visit
ors in 1946, a total of 110,000
000 made use of the boating,
picnic and other recreational
areas in 1961.
Boating has been the ma
jor interest at the new reser
voirs, especially in regions
which formerly lacked nav
igable waters. To meet this
increased enthusiasm the
Corps Of Engineers have built
1,900 boat launching ramps
on 200-man-made lakes and
these facilities are continual
ly being increased.
Congress annually provides
the necessary appropriations
for waterway projects.
So far the president's wife,
who has done a lot of inter
esting decorating at the
White House, has not turned
her attention to the Honey
Fitz.
