Compounds Help Keep Craft Clean
Year after year the for
ward march of progress by
the manufacturers of clean-,
ers, compounds, and polishes
offer the boating enthusiast
products that make the Job of
keeping a shipshape and spic
and span craft easier. The
new chemical compounds are .
designed to keep bright work
looking new and make it last
longer.
There is no reason to be
downcast by the prospects of
cleaning up a deck soiled with
grease, gasoline, oil stains and
scuff marks or the parting
traces of departed landlubber
guests. The new polishes and
cleaners not only have long
lasting and hard wearing qual
ities but when they must be
applied they do the hard
work with a minimum of ef
fort. The increased use of new
construction materials in boat
building has been no chal
lenge to the manufacturers.
They have enlarged their lines
to offer cleaners and polish
es for aluminum, fiberglass,
and other plastic materials,
no matter what the boat is
made from, in addition to
those constructed of wood.
Manufacturers have taken
particular notice of' the fi
berglass hulls and decks. Pol
ishes and cleaners that re
move the deck stains or dock
scuff - marks on the hull are
on the market for the fiber
glass boat owner. In addi
tion there are scratch and
gouge repair kits for any pre
polishing work on the deck.
All of the manufacturers
boast of long wearing and
hard gloss that results from
the brighteners.
The wood boats have not
been overlooked. Active and
efficient soaps, if precleaning
and polishing is required,
scratch removers, bottom
cleaners, polish and wax are
all available for the owner
of a boat built of wood, wheth
er painted or varnished.
The aluminum boat owner
may seem to have it a little
easier since in most instances
clear water, ordinary cleans
er and wax are enough. How
ever, if his craft is painted
and with the special epoxy
paints there are cleaners and
polish suited for this surface.

According to a federal dis
trict court ruling, yacht club
members must pay a dues tax
on the extra fee they pay the
club as rental for use of
boat slip.
Such payments although
over and above members' reg
ular club dues, are subject
to tax the same as dues, the
court ruled.

Pool Covers Said Becoming Important
With permanent swimming
pools being built at a rate of
more than 50,000 per year
in the United States, safety
afforded by modern pool cov
ers becomes increasingly im
portant for the millions of
swimmers, safety officials
agree.
A permanent aluminum
pool cover which automatical
ly locks into place, opens and
clost-s accordion - style via
a switch cord which secures
power from either a battery
or electricity, has been devel
oped and patented by petro
leum engineer E. A. Bender
of Bakersfield, California.
Bender, who recently form
ed a company which manufac
tures and sells the safety de
vice nationwide under the
name of Pool - Deck Inc., per
fected the device after five
years of effort. Unable to lo
cate a satisfactory pool cover
to protect his infant son, so
built, tested and perfected his
own.
May Leave Pools
With this cover on, owners
may now leave their pools un
attended for even months at
a time and be sure that chil-
dren andor adults will not
have access to their pool.
When this all-metal cover is
in place it is impossible to en
ter the pool. It cannot be
opened without the owner's
removable switch cord.
Pool Deck owners gain
the benefits of reduced main
tenance costs to help defray
the cost of their safety unit.
Pool heating and use of bac
tericide chemicals can be re
duced up to two-thirds. Leaves
and other foreign matter can
not fall into the pool nearly
as easily when it is covered,
thus reducing the filter's work
load. Consequently, heating,
maintenance and cleaning
costs, all can be reduced con
siderably. Many architects are now
specifying Pool - Deck instal
lations for clients because the
unit adds beauty to the pool
area. A wide choice of colors
that blend with pool and patio
surroundings is available.
There is no limit to the dis
tance Pool - Deck can be run
beyond the edge of the pool,
thus making is possible to
conceal it when not in use.

that carbon tetrachloride fire
extinguishers as well as oth
ers of the toxic vaporizing li
quid type are no longer ac
ceptable as approved equip
ment by the Coast Guard.
Because of accidents and
injuries that occurred as a re
suit of their use, approvals
on this type of extinguisher
were withdrawn in December,
1958. However, extinguisher -of
this type in useable serv
ice at that time were per
mitted to remain as approved
equipment until January 1,
1962.
