FDA Warns Public
01 Useless Cures
For Disease
; By WILLIAM J. EATON
United Pmi Iniernetionel
Washington CWD Federal
Food and Drug administration
(FDA) watchdogs, cheered by
a court decision in their favor,
have warned the public anew
to beware of worthless cure-
alls made of weird ingredi
ents.
Such products usually are
peddled door-to-door or sold
by mail.
Officials said shark oil, salt
water, oyster shells, pig skin
extract, lemon peels, orchid
pollen and a host of other
things compose some of the
preparations which can t pos
sibly live up to the neaitn-giv
lng effects claimed for them
Late last month, the FDA
seized 58,000 capsules of Sal-
flower seed oil which
charged has been falsely ad
vertised as a reducing aid
Also confiscated were 1,600
copies of a best-selling diet
book which recommended th
oil as effective for losing
weight.
The FDA, in a complaint
filed with U. S. district court
in New York, described saf
flower seed oil as "insignif
icant for any purpose.
George P. Larrick, Commis
sioner of the FDA, said in a
statement for general circula
tion that many products still
are on the market despite his
agency's unceasing battle
against expensive "cures" that
doctors have refused to recommend.
He said a recent Federal
Court decision against a major
seller of "royal Jelly"-a sub
stance secreted by bees and
often claimed to have vast
healing powers-illustrates the
FDA's uphill fight.
'Jelly' Seised
After months of Investiga
tion in 1958, the agency
brought charges against Jena
sol Co. of New York following
seizure of capsules said to con
tain the jelly and some vita
mins.
Jenasol labels and litera
ture, the FDA said, claimed
the product would increase
sexual vitality, relieve head
aches, improve memory, pep
up the appetite, extend the
life span, help tired eyes and
relax tensions.
The agency produced nine
scientists who testified before
Federal District Judge Rey-
nier J. Wortendyke Jr., in
New Jersey that royal jelly
was medically worthless.
"The fact is that analysis of
royal jelly shows its chemical
properties to be similar to
evaporated cow's milk," the
FDA said. It said a false the
ory promoted for many years
argued that the jelly must be
good for humans since it is fed
to queen bees who grow sev
eral times as large as worker
bees and lay thousands of
eggs.
An Italian physician, Dr.
Ricardo Galeazzi, testified at
the trial that royal jelly ben
efitted hunderds of his pa
tients. It also was endorsed by
Dr. Angel Lozano Abarca of
Mexico City.
Judge Wortendyke's ruling
upheld the government's case.
He also ordered destroyed
royal jelly seized more than
three years ago.
FDA officials said the prod
uct often was sold through the
mails or by door-to-door sales
men although U. S. medical
schools did not teach its use.
"Royal Jelly is another ex
ample of the exploitation of
outlandish exotic substances
as miracle Ingredients which
has gone on since the middle
ages," Larrick said. He said
It takes a long time under ex
isting laws to halt the sale of
worthless products claimed to
be cures for a host of ail
ments. "Many such products are
being peddled today," he said.
"They include preparations of
rose hips, alfalfa, bee pollen,
lemon peels, sea salt and sea
water, oyster shells, turtle oil,
chick embryos, plankton, pig
skin extract, shark oil, or
chid pollen and other new
ones appearing every year."
