We're beginning to' get i few items from the Wilder-ville-Wonder
area in Joesphine county. Our friend over
there, Genevieve Briggs, asked if she could send in
some news stories in order to gain some writer's disci
pline. Although I realized that such a situation might
be a case of the blind leading the blind, I agreed to go
ahead with it.
Mrs. Briggs is doing pretty well. She has at least
grasped one of the important fundamentals in news
writing: the art of being concise (something that some
of my other correspondents occasionally need to be
reminded of!). Take for example the following item I
received from Mrs. Briggs yesterday:
"Wonder Mrs. John Jacobs is the new president
of the Wlldervllle PTA. Miss Dariene Jacobs broke her
toe."
Admittedly, this item is a little confusing, in that
we are not sure whether Mrs. Jacobs is the new president
because of the fact that Miss Jacobs (possibly the former
president) broke her toe and was therefor unable to
continue In office, or whether Miss Jacobs is Mrs,
Jacob's daughter and the fact that she broke her toe
recently was just added on as an interesting family item.
I have written Mrs. Briggs to ask for a clarification on
that point. The fact remains, however, that other writers
might have taken two to three pages to cover the same
Itory or stories that Mrs. Briggs has summarized in
two sentences. She's really got some discipline!
Seriously, there are some interesting news Items in
the Wilderville and Wonder area. Here are a few of
them:
"Wonder Floyd Wcldon, owner of the Weldon
Wrecking company has gone to Los Angeles for the
opening of the baseball season. Weldon says there has
been a marked increase in the . building business since
spring arrived. David Weldon accompanied his father
on the trip. '
"Wilderville Chihuahua Haven has been chosen as
the name of the kennels here owned by Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Miggctt. They are expanding their kennels
and now have 20 chihuahuas of the deer and coby type
and plan on adding blacks and tans.
"Wilderville Mrs. Etta Lowden is in Sacred Heart
hospital with a fractured hip. Mrs. Lowden is the widow
of Issac Lowden, the last of the stage coach drivers from
Grants Pass to Wilderville . . . Stanley Glen is up and
about again after a severe heart attack . . . Mrs. John
Bagwell is home after major surgery at Josephine Gen
eral hospital. She suffered a bad fall in the snow this
winter . . ., Mrs. Jim Deveny is at home after major
surgery at Travis Air Force Base hospital in California."
The Protptct Fira Truck is Okay
Some time ago we reported that the fire truck at
Prospect was out of commission and could not be count
ed upon to respond to fire alarms. Now Velda Barr,
our Prospect correspondent, reports that the truck is
running and has been called out to extinguish a few
grass fires.
Fresh Air on the Airwavas
Back In January when we were discussing "air
pollution and radio programming," I wished out loud
that a good music radio station would oome to the
valley. It Is with pleasure that I report that one has.
Although KSHA (860 on the dial) docs not appear to be
playing much classical music, it is presenting some
pleasant instrumental sounds that are soothing to tha
ear. It will do very nicely.

delegates elected at the con
vention in Salem recently.
Of intrest to the people of
southern Oregon was the en
dorsement at the convention
ot keeping "Winnemucca to
the Sea" project in the Demo
cratic Platform. Three Jose
phine County delegates, Mrs.
Cliff Driscoll and Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Kicnstra were on the
Economic Development sub
committee which played a
large part in keeping the
"Winnemucca to the Sea" on
the floor to be adopted.
Band Ratings
Williams Josephine Coun
ty honor bund's final ratings
were received from the judges
of the Southern Oregon music
contest Saturday, held at Hod
rick Junior High school, Med
ford. It was rated "ono-minus "
out of a possible achievement
score of "one", in its "F"
classification.
The Josephine County
honor band consists of more
than 100 students from the
music departments of eleven
county schools.

River, Calif., spent a week at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed
Michcls and family while
Mrs. Michcls recovered from
recent surgery.
Hoover Distributes
1,000 Evergreens
To Wolf Creek Area
Eagle Point - "The Rogue
Valley should be completely
landscaped with ever green
trees now," Charles C. Hoover
announced after he completed
distributing 1 ,0110 trees to the
Wolf Creek area recently.
Hoover said the Grange at
Eagle Point included mostly
blue spruce but hud a mixture
of other varieties in the trees
given to tile Wolf Creek,
Hugo, and Williams area.
"There is spruce In all parts
of the Rogue Valley now," he
added.
A telephone call was made
to Rosi'inu'g Grangers asking
them if they wauled the extra
trees the Eagle Point Grange
had. The Roscburg people not
only w, tilled the extra trees
but asked if they couldn't get
more for the students in their
1 st von schools. In order to do
this il required the ordering

Hoover said the Grange
would deliver the trees they

A special arts and crafts
exhibit will be on display as

Ferguson. Everyone is in
vited to come in and get ac
quainted with the library and

The library, first estab
lished in 1921, is the oldest
branch library in the county
and now occupies the historic
Brunner Bros, building where
women and children sought
safety during frequent Indian
raids in the Jacksonville area.
The building was built-in
1H54 and has been said to be
one of the oldest brick build
ings still in use in Oregon and
is indeed a landmark of the
Gold Rush days.

Eagle Point Budget
Election Set May 7
Eagle Point-No opposition
was expressed but several
questions were asked during
School District No. 9's budget
hearing last Monday night at
Eagle Point. Eagle Point, Elk
Trail, and Shady Cove were
all represented when the
budget committee presented
the proposed $994,477 budget
for the fiscal year ending
June 30, 1963.
Superintendent Glen D.
Hale told the group that he
wished more people under
stood why the district must
vote on the budget each year.
A 6 per cent limitation was
set for budgets several years
ago when Eagle Point iad a
little four room school and a
handful of students compared
to the number now in the dis
trict, he said. In order to run
the schools with larger build
ings and increased population
the budget must be increased

Each year a group of spe
cially trained dancers have a
period before each play when
they present dances of the
Elizabethan period that were
popular in the Shakespearean
era. Linda's whole summer
will be taken up with pre-sea-son
training and the dancing
for the plays. She has to re
port in Ashland June 10.
Shady Cove-To tourists and
people passing through the
center of Shady Cove on the
Crater Lake highway it seems
a pretty little spot with nicely
tended beds of flowers, daffo
dils now, and others later on
in the summer placed In stra
tegic locations.
Credit for these improve
ments is due the Shady Cove
Garden club whose members
are responsible for the mak
ing of the flower beds, plant
ing, etc. This year a new one
has been placed by the big
tree at Roguedale Market.

The election will be held
May 7.
Bids for construction of the
administration office and re
modeling of the District high
school at Eagle Point will be
opened Thursday at 8 p.m. in
the high school library.

Shady Cove-Two new busi
ness ventures have been start
ed this month in Shady Cove
which are allied in nature in
that they both have to go with
the nursery business and both
have taken much preparation.
One is the Dickenson's
Primrose Gardens located
about a mile on the Old Ferry
road with location signs on
the highway. The Dickensons
have lived in the community
about 10 years and own their
home on the Rogue river
where the business also is lo
cated. The Primrose Gardens are
open every day except Tues
day and visitors are welcome.
The other new business is
also located on the Old Ferry
road just down a short dis
tance from the Primrose Gar
dens. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ham
mons who have the Signal
Service station in Shady Cove
now have for sale a stock of
dwarf Musho pine trees.
These trees require special
care In gelling them started
and take about four years be
fore they are ready for sale.

Bluebird Girls Honored
At Annual Birthday Event
Central Point - The annual
birthday dinner for Campfire
and Bluebird groups was held
recently at the Jewett school.
The event marked the 52nd
anniversary of the organiza
tion. David DcArmond was mas
ter of ceremony. The Camp
fire and Bluebirds led the
audience in the "Pledge of
Allegiance."
Mrs. Adcl Longmore was
the guest speaker. She was
from the Adult membership
committee In Medford. She
also helped to organize the
Campfire group In the Eugene
area.
The opening verse "Hi Mom
and Dad" was given by the
second grade crouo. The Blue
birds sang "If I had a Wind
mill." Following the performance,
DeArmond presented awards
for the recent candy sale. Owl
palches were presented for
selling 30 boxes of candy. Re
