shots that rang loudest in the
major leagues Tuesday were
by the new Colt 45s and two-
gun Roman Mejias.
The Houston Colts intro
duced major league baseball
to the land of the Alamo and
Mejias shot off a double-bar
reled salute in the form of a
pair of three-run homers that
made it an easy five-hit, 11-2
conquest for Bobby Shantz
over the Chicago Cubs.
And speaking of shoot-'em-ups,
Roger Maris, Mickev
Mantle and Bill Skowron each
blasted a home run to help
power the world champion
New York Yankees to a 7-6
opening victory over the Bal
timore Orioles.
Whitey Ford started the
game for the Yankees and
Luis Arroyo saved it in the
ninth. As one wise-guy put it
upon leaving Yankee stadium,
"It was just like watching an

4-2 win over the Minnesota
Twins; and Sherman Lollar's
ninth-inning single drove in
the Chicago White Sox' win
ning run in a 2-1 triumph over
the Los Angeles Angels.

The scheduled debut of the

Cardinals at night in St. Louis
was rained out. The Wash
ington Senators and Detroit
Tigers were idle.
Three ex-Pirates helped the
Colt 45s beat the Cubs before
a disappointingly small crowd
of 25,271 at Houston s tem
porary new ballpark.
Mejias hit a three -run
homer in the third inning off
Chicago starter Don Cardwell
and repeated in the eighth in-
ning against Al Lary to drive
in six runs for the day. Catch
er Hal smith also nil a Hous
ton homer.
Shantz, who has not been a
regular starter since he won
24 games for the Philadelphia
Athletics in 1952, had a shut
out until Ernie Banks hit the
299th homer of his career for
the Cubs in the seventh.
Post's three-run homer olf
lefty Johnny Podres in the
seventh inning broke a 2-2 tic
and earned the Reds their win
over the Dodgers. Bob Pur
key got the victory, although
Bill Henry saved it by pitch
ing the Reds out of a bases
loaded, one-out jam In the

for the San Francisco Giants
against the Milwaukee Braves.
For Juan Marichal. the
Giants' lithe right - hander,
started the 1962 season on a
sparkling note Tuesday by '
holding the Tribe to three hits
in pitching the Giants to a 6-0
victory.
He had a one-hitter going
as far as the ninth then was
tagged for singles by Tommie
Aaron and Frank Boiling. But
third baseman Jim Davenport
turned Joe Torre's tricky
bounder into a double play
that helped quell the threat.
Carlton Willey, 6-12 last I
year, will face O'Dell Umight. i
Billy posted a 7-5 mark last
season.
A crowd of 39,177 watched ;
Marichal strike out 10 Braves
with Henry Aaron - one of
