These Animal. Are
The Thrifty Type
The saving habit has reach
1 ed a high degree of perfection
in man; bank deposits attest
to this fact. But few of the
lower animals make any plans
for putting something away
for a rainy day.
There are a few notable
exceptions. Squirrels, especial
ly the various ground squir
rels as well as those that live
in trees, make the storing
habit almost a phobia to
them It is a means of survival.
Dogs occasionally bury a
bone against the days of short
supply. Ants, bees and a few
of the other species of insects
collect food against times of
famine and usually not for
themselves, either, but un
selfishly for those of their
fellows that will follow. The
bee that works itself to death
gathering nectar probably will
be dead long before what it
saved is used.
Frugal ' Anti
For all-around thrift and
. resourcefulness and constant
frugality, probably the vari
ous species of ants exercise
the most judgment in assur
ing themselves that they and
their fellows will continue to
live off the fat of the land.
There is ant species that
stores grain, watches over it
with constant care, carrying
it up into the sunlight if it
becomes wet and biting off
the sprout ends to keep the
kernels plump and fresh.
There Is an ant species that
raises its own food in the
form of fungi. There are ants
that store the nectar from
flowers in the distended bod
ies of some of their own hill
mates. Some keep plant lice,
tend them carefully and se
cure from them sweet honey
dew; a thin, sweetish juice
relished by ants. Not fore
sight or plan, just a saving
habit they can't seem to neg
lect or overcome.
Few Birds Save
A few bird species save
objects but not food. In the
rodent family of animals there
are many that are extremely
thrifty and, strangely, some
that are hopelessly shiftless,
making absolutely no plan for
days when, if they had any
judgment at all, they would
know it would be a long time
between meals.
' Mice, rats, gophers, beavers
and muskrats all store food.
The hamster accumulates
more food than he and all
his immediate family could
cat in several years.
He gets so carried away
with his work that he stores
so much grain he doesn't have
room for himself. Yet other
rodents such as the porcupine,
rabbit and woodchuck, . as
well as some others, never
bother to lay away a smidgin
of food for tomorrow's break
fast or even this afternoon's
lunch.
Brookings Firms
Adopt Fast Time
Brookings - (UPD - Business
and professional men here
said today they would change
to daylight saving time effec
tive May 21.
A poll of 58 businessmen
showed 56 to be in favor of
fast time. The 1 city council
said it would take no official
action, but would change to
fast time If the community
wished.
Of the three mills in the
area having large employ
ment, one has changed to
fast time and the other two
said they were exploring the
possibility by polling employees.
Brookings school was to de
cide today if fast time would
be adopted.
Idaho Power May
Be Sued Over Fish
Portland-IUPD-Oregon, Wash'
ington and Idaho may sue the
Idaho Power Co. for fish loss
es at the firm's Brownlee and
Oxbow dams on the Snake
river. -
This was decided by the
attorneys general of the three
states here Wednesday. The
trio, Oregon's Robert Thorn
ton, John J. O'Connell of
Washington and Idaho's
Frank Benson, reached agree
ment that the Idaho firm
should be made to pay for fish
losses.
Thornton listed three legal
aspects as: (1) can the states
sue the power company? (2)
can negligence be. proven?
(3) and how can damages be
assessed?

Ira J. Hechler and Howard L.
Weingrow saw many oppor
tunities available to a com
pany engaged primarily in
the Investment in and inte
grated ownership, operation
and management of office
buildings, apartment develop
ments, hotels, motels, and oth
er Income producing real
estate.
Each of the three execu
tives is equally versed in all
phases of the company's ac
tivities, giving a managament
depth that is particularly rare
in the highly individualistic
real estate investment field.
Continuing Operations
The company places empha
sis on continuing operations,
and will sell properties when
they no long provide tax
shelter or when large capital
gains can be realized.
Its present properties are
located in 15 cities and in
clude two office buildings,
three apartment complexes,
five hotels and 10 motels.
The company expects to fo
cus its activli' s in four pri
mary areas: The continued ac
quisition and ownership of
sound income producing of
fice buildings, apartment
houses and industrial proper
ties; creation of profit
through the purchase, refi
nancing and sale of income
properties; organisation and
sponorship of promising syn
dication situations; and ex
pansion in the hotel field.
It's this last area that repre
sents a particularly promising
growth field for the company,
Lifton told United Press In
ternational. The firm's wholly - owned
Dinkier Hotel . Corp. was the
result of the integration of
Transcontinental's hr '1 and
motel properties with the
Dinkier- hotel-motel chain.
Lifton said that through the
acquisition - of " the Dinkier
chain Transcontinental re
ceived the services of the
Dinkier organization which
has been, in existence for
more than 80 years and is
noted for its outstanding man
agerial ability.
Major Transactions
- He noted that the Dinkier
reputation already has per
mitted the company to under
take ' management of hotel
properties owned by others on
a "lucrative" L.isis.
Mean while, the company
soon is expected to announce
some major transactions that
will make it a major hotel
operator.
The very nature of the com
pany's business and geograph
ical locations of its present
properties really keep Lifton,
Hechler and Weingrow on the
move. At least one of the
three is traveling around the
country every week

Jeff Chandler
Fighting for Life
Culver City, Calif. -(UPD-
Rugged, gray-haired actor Jeff
Chandler, weakened by 7V4
hours in the operating room,
fought for his life today at
Culver City Hospital.
Doctors said Chandler, 42,
underwent emergency abdom
inal surgery Thursday and his
postoperative condition was
critical. .,.- . . ; ;
Other sources said the
movie he-man had received
more than 50 pints of blood
by transfusion, apparently be
cause of an arterial hemor
rhage ' that began Thursday
morning.
Chandler s condition was
the third shock in recent
months for Hollywood where
beloved film stars Clark Gable
and Gary Cooper have died.
Gable, 60, died Nov. 16 of a
heart attack and Cooper, 60,
died last Saturday of cancer
after a painful illness.
Bill Solves Problem
Of Florida Speed Trap

Florida Senate, irked
by charges that the little
town of Boulogne on the
Georgia - Florida border
was running a speed trap to
fleece tourists, passed a bill
abolishing the town Thursday.
