Children Enrolled
For Kindergarten
Ashland - Nearly 50 par
ent of kindergarten age chil
dren lined the main hall of
the Administration building
' at Southern Oregon college
Monday In an attempt to pre
register children in the col
lege - sponsored kindergarten
beginning in September.
"Though enrollment is on
an order of application ba
sis," Donald E. Lewis, assist-
' ant to the president and busi
ness manager, said, "we do
given preference to the chil
dren of staff and faculty mem

Lewis pointed out that the
college though interested in
kindergarten as well as all
other levels of educational In
struction, would not attempt
the expansion of existing fa
cilities more than was needed
for the student teaching pro
gram. !V - 1
"Our interest is In the field
of higher education," he said
adding that the responsibility
of establishing community
kindergartens lies with the
local taxpayers and the re
spective school boards.
The first 40 children regis
tered were given preference
and a $5 registration fee was
charged which is applied to
ward tuition. This sum is re
funded if the child does not
attend - and the next family
- on tne waiting list is notified
Of the vacancy. Children en
rolled must be five on or be
fore Nov. 15, 1961, to qualify,
