Westside Rabbltters 4-H club
was held at the home of Janet
Lee. There were 17 members
present, five of whom were
new members. Under the lead
ership of our new club leader,
C. W. Call, projects to raise
money and a new name for
the club were discussed. Prob
lems of raising rabbits were
talked over, and the meeting
was adjourned. Refreshments

HERBERT E. FARMER
Herbert E. Farmer, 83, died
Monday in a local hospital.
Mr. Farmer was born Feb.
7, 1876, in Henry county,
Missouri. He was married
Nov. 27, 1907, in Avilla, Mo.,
to Edna Gass, who preceded
him in death Oct. 10, 1943.
He lived in Billings, Mont.,
for some time before moving
to Medford. He was a mem
ber of the First Baptist church
in Billings.
Survivors include several
nieces and nephews in Mis
souri, Washington, and Cali
fornia, as well as two sisters-
in-law, Miss Ermyne Gass,
Medford; and Mrs. C. Gass, of
Medford; and a brother-in-law,
Price D. Gass, Seattle,
Wash.
Funeral services will be
held at Conger-Morris down
town chapel Wednesday at 7
p.m. The Rev. Virgil Harsh
of the Open Bible church will
officiate. Committal services
will bt held from Smith's Fu
neral home, in Billings,
Mont., and burial will be be
side his wife in Mount View

Harry W. Russell, 82, died
yesterday at his home, 302
Crater Lake ave.
Mr. Russell was born Dec.
28, 1878, ln Platte Center,
Neb., and had lived in south
ern Oregon for the last 30
years. -
He was married Oct. 5,
1904 in Ord, Neb., to Effle
Jones, who died in August,
1958. He was a member of
the Fifty Plus club and of
the Presbyterian church.
Survivors include a daugh
ter, Mrs. Carol Blyth, Med
ford. and a brother. Albert
Russell, Broken Bow, Neb.
Funeral services will be
held at Conger-Morris down
town chapel Wednesday at
2:30 p.m. Committal will be

Flora Elizabeth Shirley, 70,
who died in Sacramento,
Calif., Saturday, will be held
at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Perl
Funeral home. The Rev. Ed
ward Stauffer of the First
Baptist church will officiate.
Committal will be in Siskiyou
Memorial park.
Mrs. Shirley lived with her
daughter, Mrs. John P. Burch,
in Sacramento for the past
five years. Prior to that, she
lived in Medford for 34 years.
Mrs. Shirley was born in
Blackhawk county, Missouri,
March 22, 1891, and was mar
ried Nov. 19, 1913, to Ralph
H. Shirley, who preceeded her
in death in 1943.
Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. John P.
Burch, Sacramento, Calif.;
Mrs. Donald Greaves, Med
ford; one son, Paul L. Thomp
son of New York City; five
grandchildren, one great
grandson; and several nieces
and nephews.
Casket bearers will be Hol
land Smith, Herbert Good,
William Messer, John C.
Greaves, R. E. Boyd and
Bruce Moffatt.

for Mrs. Christena Coley, 77,
who died at her Keno home
Sunday evening, will be held

will be in Mt. View cemetery.
Mrs. Coley was born in
Frankfort, Mo., May 23, 1883,
and moved west with her par
ents in 1897 to Hartllne,
Wash. She moved to Tulelake,
Calif., in-1929, where her hus
band, Rufus Coley, died Aug.
10, 1937.
In 1949, Mrs. Coley moved
to Keno.
Survivors include two sons,
Marvin Coley, Webb City,
Mo., and Orval Coley, Keno;
two daughters, Helen Coley,
Keno, and' Mrs. Lois Marie
Huxtable, Dunsmuir, Calif.;
two grandchildren and four
great grandchildren.

Heating Season
To End June 1
Although the current warm
weather may indicate that the
orchard heating season is
over, orchardists may still
have to fire their heaters as
late as Memorial Day, two
weeks from today, according
to Meterologlst Bill Rogers, of
the fruit frost warning service.
The season is not officially
over until June 1, he said.
So far orchardist have fired
12 nights. Ten is average, he
said. Last year 11 nights of
firing were required. No
orchard heating has been re
quired this month so far, al
though temperatures dropped
to 30 degrees one night.
Rogers generally estimated
the loss to the pear crop at 2
per cent. "While this is not
significant for the valley as
a whole some pear men are
wiped out," he noted. "Most
of these are on the west side
of the valley with a few in
the Valley View area north
of Ashland."
The meterologist said he
would have his report com
pleted on the orchard heating
season soon after it officially
ends.

Ashland-No opposition was
voiced against a proposed
ordinance creating two resi
dential zones In Ashland at
a planning commission public
hearing last night.
The hearing lasted less than
one hour. The commission rec
ommended sending the ordi
nance to the city council lor
action. The council Is sched
uled to hold a hearing on the
proposal at 8 o'clock tonight.
The ordinance calls for cre

Truck Damaged - A pickup
truck was heavily damaged

Canada Visit
Kennedy left Andrews Field
in nearby Maryland aboard a
sleek 707 government jet
transport for the two-hour
flight to Ottawa. They are due
back in Washington Thursday.

Two Four-Week
Workshops Planned
Ashland-For the first time
Southern Oregon college is of
fering two four-week summer
session workshops which may
be taken individually or in
conjunction with one another.
They are principles of edu
cational theater, TA 307, and
puppetry, A 312, starting June
19 and ending July 14. Dr.
BUI A. Sampson, director of
summer sessions, said each
will offer three quarter hours
of undergraduate credit, and
graduate credit will be grant
ed by special arrangement.
Dr. Dorothy Stelp, associate
professor of speech and drama
will Instruct principles of edu
cational theater which will in
clude methods and materials
for developing the theater
program within the curricu
lum and as an extra curricular
activity, and include experi
ences in creative dramatics
and children's theater.
Miss Marion Ady, associate
professor of art, will be the
instructor for puppetry which
will include construction and
costuming of puppets, the pro
duction of puppet plays, and
the construction of simple and
complex puppet theaters.
All materials to be used for
the workshop are available in
any community. There will be
lectures and some contact
with the child's viewpoint In
a classroom situation.

Beaverton Woman ,
Victim of Accident
Hillsboro - (UPD r- Mrs.
Juanita Klein, 33, Beaverton,
died today of injuries suffered
Saturday in a one-car crash
on Highway 8 near. Reedville.
She was the second victim of
the -accident.
Her 3-year-old son, Klmber-
ly Klein, died outright in the
crash, John Klein, the hus
band, was reported still in
critical condition.

A spokesman in Newport
said the mills are on fast time

School Districts
Salem (UPD The board of
directors of an administrative
school district lacks athority
to grant a tax offset to resi
dents of a former component
school district, Atty. Gen,
Robert Y. Thornton said to
day;
The school district reorga
nization law, Thornton said,
provided that the administra
tive district was to succeed to
all property and assets of
each of the formerly existing
aistricts.
"We know of no provision
of law which would permit a
further . . . adjustment of as
sets that would otherwise ac
crue to the newly-formed ad
ministrative district," Thorn
ton said. .
The opinion was requested
by Rep. Joe Rogers (R-Inde-
pendence). It specifically con
