there-Jim Coates, Jim Duffa

Each of the three righthand
ers came through nobly Sun
day on a day when relief
pitching in the majors gener
ally overshadowed everything
else.
Coates gained credit for
both ends of a doubleheader
which the New York Yankees
swept from the first-place De
troit Tigers, 5-4, in 11 Innings
ana b-b.
Duffalo, the rookie reliever
of the San Francisco Giants,
won his third game without a
defeat in an 8-7 victory over
the Milwaukee Braves that
widened the Giants' lead in
the National league to a full
game.
And Funk, another rookie,
pitched seven scoreless relief
innings against the Baltimore
Orioles to help Cleveland win
a 15-innlng opener, 1-0, after
Dodgers Blast

Fisher, who entered the game

Washington's two victories
over Boston were turned in by
rookie Joe McClain, who held
the Red Sox to five hits in the
opener, and Bennie Daniels,
who fired a three-hitter in the
nightcap. McClain retired the
first 16 men in order in the
opener before Billy Harrell
singled. Jim King homered in
the first game and Harry
Bright in the nightcap. Billy
Muffett and Mike Fornieles
were the losers.
Two-run homers by Luis
Aparicio, Wes Covington and
Jim Landis plus the five-hit
pitching of Bob Shaw led the
White Sox to their opening
game win over the A's. Roy
Sievers extended his hitting
streak to 19 games but lefty
Joe Nuxhall snapped the
streak in the nightcap. Nux
hall gave up five hits in seven
innings, then was relieved by
Jim Archer in the eighth.
Herb Score was the loser,
yielding four of Kansas City's
five runs.
The Cubs, trailing the Dodg
ers 8-4 after seven innings,
fashioned their winning rally
in the llth on three singles
and a sacrifice fly. Dick Far
relL who relieved starter Don
Drysdale, was charged with
the loss. Don Elston won his
fifth game against one defeat
by limiting the Dodgers to one
hit over the last four innings.
Seven homers were hit in the
game. Norm Larker, Charlie
Neal, Tommy Davis, Drysdale
and Ron Fairly connected for
the Dodgers, and George Alt-
man and Sammy Taylor for
the Cubs.
Frank Robinson hit his sev
enth and eighth homers of the
season to lead the Reds to
their victory over Bob Friend
of the Pirates. Robinson hit
his first homer off Friend and
his second one off reliever El-
roy .Face. Rookie Ken Hunt

from Jim Brosnan in the sev

for the Pirates.
The Phillies broke a 4-4 tie

field in the history of the 500
mile Memorial Day auto race,
to be led for the second con
secutive year by hard-charg
ing Eddie Sachs.
Twenty-two cars were qual
ified Saturday, but only five
Sunday on a sunny but gusty
day, setting the stage for a
hectic final time trial week
end.
Rallbirds estimated at least
20 cars that have yet to quali
fy have a chance.
It will again be' Sachs, the
colorful former tavern owner
from Center Valley, Pa., who
will lead the field on its flying
start May 30 in the chase for
a $375,000 jackpot.
Although he has yet to fin
ish the race, Sachs averaged
147.481 mph for his 10 mile
trial hop to win the pole posi
tion in the same car for the
second year in a row only
the third time in history that
this was accomplished. Only
qualification record holder
