Crazy Catch
; By Robert Besch
Each player ties one end of a three-foot length
of string around a cardboard tube from a roll of
wax paper. Fasten a rubber eraser to the other end
of the string. Using one hand only, hold the tube
and flip the eraser into the air, trying to catch it in
the tube. The first player to make three catches is
the winner.

The talk at the coffee party wandered from resorts to
recipes to Brigitte Bardot.
Don't ask how that happened. You know women.
About that time someone picked up a piece of strudel
and said, "You know, I feel awfully sorry for that girl."
"Brigitte Bardot?" someone else asked incredulously.
"Sure," said the strudel muncher. "She has everything, so
she tried to commit suicide. It seems fantastic, but I don't
really believe it Is."
"I know what you mean," said the woman who took cream.
"People who have everything have nothing else to work for."
The women looked around at one another and agreed.
"I'd love to go all the places I've always wanted to," said
one. "And have a mink coat and all the money I wanted to
spend. But I'm not sure' I'd be happy."
Another said, "When there's nothing left to want, there's
no pleasure left. I guess you always have to have goals, even
if you never achieve them. Maybe it's better if you never do."
"I'd rather not be rich and famous," said another. "When
you can buy anything you want, you stop wanting anything."
The guest of honor crumbled a cookie on her plate.
"This conversation reminds me of a story," she said hesi
tantly. She was the neighborhood newcomer, so she chose
her words carefully.
"Maybe you've heard it, but it applies.
"A man died and, after death, he had everything he'd ever
wanted in life. All that he'd dreamed of was his to enjoy.
And he did, for a while. Finally there was no challenge any
longer. There was nothing to desire. So he called in the care
taker and said, 'Frankly, I'm bored. I just can't stand so
much of everything any more. I never knew heaven would
be like this.'
"The caretaker looked at him and smiled. Then he said, 'I
thought you knew. This isn't heaven.' "
