Race Driver Killed
At Indianapolis

today in a practice run at the
Indianapolis Speedway."
Bettenhausen was testing
the car for his friend, Paul
Russo, Fortvllle, Ind.
Bettenhausen crashed
through the inside retaining
wall at the end of the home
stretch. Hundreds of specta
tors and race officials were
near the site.
The race car hurdled the
wall and orashed through a
wire fence, landing in the
first few rows of seats. The
seats were unoccupied,

Ex-Medford Man
Dies Near Weed
Vreka - The body of a
former Medford man who ap
parently shot himself in the
head was discovered late last
night In a car one mile south
of Weed.
Siskiyou county sheriff's
deputies identified the man
as Orvllle Odoll Brown, 49.
of Redding. Coroner A. B.
Cottar said Brown died about
4 p.m. Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife,
Bonnie; a daughter, Mrs.
Shirley , Newell, of Long
Beach, and a son, Dorman, of
Redding.
Brown was employed by
Medford lumber company
until 1959.

RR Times Sold
To Florence Man
Rogue River - The Rogue
River Times, a weekly news
paper started Nov. 2, 1951,
has been sold by its founders
and owners,' Maxwell and
Marcia Thayer to Wayne Mor
gan, Florence, Ore.
Morgan, who with two
brothers published a news
paper in Florence until it was
sold last December, will be
assisted by his br , . .er, Lei
and. The Thayers own a farm
on Foots Creek rd. where
they plan to retire. They are
working with the Morgans to
acquaint them with the
Times' operation. The news
paper, the first offset news
paper in Oregon, publishes
every Thursday with a circu
lation of about 1,000 mainly
in Jackson and Josephine
counties.
Among the awards which
the Times has received was a
National Editorial association
award in 1956 for the best
news story for weeklies un
der 2,000 circulation. The
story was about the severe
flood in the valley.
Thayer told the Mail Tri
bune today that he understood
that the newspaper's opera
tion will continue to be bas
ically the same. At present
there are two employees in
addition to the Thayers. The
Morgans will publish their
first edition June 2.
Prior to coming to the
Rogue valley in 1951, Thayer
was employed by the Hearst
organization in California.

Set on Jail Farm 7
Sheriff Joe Walsh and
District Court . Judge L. L.
Sawyer wil lmeet with the
county court this afternoon
to discuss further a proposed
county jail farm.
Walsh said the site selected,
if the proposal is agreeable to
the county court, will depend
on the facilities and equip
ment available.
Yesterday afternoon Walsh
and Sawyer inspected the old
agronomy station at Talent
and the former horticultural
experiment station south of
Phoenix with District Attor
ney Alan Holmes and County
Commissioner Edwin Taylor.
Based on general observa
tions, Walsh said he would
prefer the horticultural prop
erty. He noted that the old
agronomy station of approxi
mately 47 acres includes some
farm equipment housed in
one of the sheds. The old
horticultural station contains
19 or 20 acres under crops.
The remainder of the 27 acres
is creek bottom river, wash
rock.
Walsh estimated that
through operation of a prison
er farm he can reduce the
meal costs perprisoner to 11 V4
cents each.
Transient Arrested
On Burglary Charge
Medford police Thursday
arrested a 21-year-old transi
ent and charged him with the
Wednesday night burglary at
the Bob Kennedy Furniture
store, 1603 North Riverside
ave. ,
Arrested and charged with
burglary not in a dwelling is
Thomas Orvllle Martt. He is
being held in the city jail
with bail set at $1,500.
Martt was arrested in the
Medford police station yester
day where . he had been
brought for questioning. Po
lice suspect that another per
son was also involved in the
burglary.
Several guns and a small
safe were reported missing
from the furniture store. The
safe reportedly contained
watches, rings and other as
