Nine Persons Die
In Violent Texas

down his cheeks, looked one
by one at the eight broken,
mangled bodies of his parents,
brothers and sisters.
"God help us, God help us,"
he. said quietly. Then he
turned away, buried his head
in his hands and cried un
ashamed, Willie had learned only a
few minutes before that he
had become an orphan. He
and another brother, Archie,
15, had been staying with a
married sister, Mrs, Francis'
White, 23, when the accident
happened, ,
Sister Badly Injured
The rest of their large fam
ily, except for a young sister,
was killed in the accident and
she was so badly Injured she
is not expected to live,
Nine persons were killed
Thursday night and the death
toll may rise to 10. It hap
pened at an Intersection of
two farm roads, about lour
miles east of Lubbock,
Lt, John Carpenter of
Reese Air Force Base was In
one car. Marks on the road
showed he hit the .brakes,
fishtailed his car, but couldn't
avoid hitting the seer nd auto
mobile loaded with he fam
ily and a friend,
"He (Carpenter), hit that
car at a 45-degree angle," a
state highway patrolman said.
"It looked like somebody had
gone down the side of the
car with a giant can opener
and just ripped It open. All
10 of them were thrown out
in a blqpdy heap."

to the accident. The witness
was rather close, and there
Is no doubt that the car ran
a stop sign and pulled out in
front of Lt, Carpenter,
Killed were Ocie Degarte,
33, a Lubbock service station
attendant; his wife, Irene, 43,
and their children - Ocie Bay
and Dolly Fay, twins who
were 10; two other sons, Bon,
8, and Richard, 2, and two
other daughters, Patricia, 11
and Doris Jane 1,
Mrs. Pearlie May King, 30,
a friend who was with them
also died, Loraine Degarte, 5,
the other person In the ear,
was In critical condition at
Methodist hospital.
Carpenter was rushed to a
hospital. Officials said he was
In good shape and expected
to survive, ,

Price Fixing
Lawsuit Filed

suit asking treble damages
against six electric supply
manufacturers alleging price
fixing was filed In Federal
Court here Thursday by the
Chelan County Public Utility
District No, 1.
The suit alleges that the
PUD was overcharged be
cause of bid rigging. Defend
ants named were General
Electric Co., Westlnghouse,
Allis-Chalmers, McGraw-Edl-son,
the Federal Pacific Elec
tric Co., and the ITE Circuit
Breaker Co,
The PUD contends it was
overcharged by $5 million
for equipment purchased for
installation in its hydroelec
tric projects. Under the Sher
man Anti-Trust Act, plaintiffs
may ask for "treble damages.
The complaint was filed by
the law firm of.Burdell and
Ferguson, Seattle.
The suit follows similar ac
tion filed elsewhere in the
United States as a result of a
federal investigation into
price fixing charges by elec
trical companies.

visitors his thoughts about
this last literary venture.
His visitors and others en
couraged him to write that
book, and subsequently a
large eastern publisher ex
pressed Interest to the Idea,
The title ol Bill Tugman's
book was to be "There Are
No Great Men,"
It would have been a won-
derf ul collection of Instructive
yarns, as only Tugman could
tell them to that colorful, can-
did way that cut through the
bluff and froth of human
events, Contemporaries would
have enjoyed reliving the live
ly times through which he and
Oregon have passed tinea the
Twenties,
Needid for Example
The tragedy, however, Is
that generations to come need
BUI Tugman's book - not so
much for the readable stories
as for his example. They need
to know that In this conform
ist age there i commendable
virtue In his conviction that
a man can be respected for
making the right enemies s
well as the right friends,
They need to see Bill Tug
man down in the arena of life
with his shirtsleeves rolled
high, never content to sit com
fortably In an editorial tower
tut-tutting about the errors of
a troubled world,
A generation which asks
first "How much does It payt
needs to know that he accu
mulated no riches but many,
many were deeply In his debt
because Bill Tugman gave his
time and he gave himself. It
should also be recorded that

board in a town far up the

be certain he made it,
He made one concession to
his weakened heart. When a
tat employee arrived to
drive him on thta overnight
trek, Tugman sat him down
to his living room, swallowed
Ma pills and stretched out on
the davenport for an hour aft
er dinner as his doctor had
ordered. But all the while he
conducted an animated reivew
of the problem of providing
recreational opportunities for
a growing population, The
hour up, he grabbed his hat
and plunged into the dark.
