For Hrt Trouble
: Boston - (UPB - Cigarette
smoking is one of the five
major . apparent causes of
heart trouble, according to a
medical specialist.
Or. Thomas R. Dawber told
a meeting of the National
Heart Institute Monday there
is "increasing evidence that
cigarette smoking is related
to the development of coron
ary thrombosis and to death
from coronary heart disease."
Dr. Dawber, chief of the
institute's Framingham heart
disease study, listed the other
four major causes aa choles
terol, overweight, blood pres-
sure and insufficient physical

writers say the society should

The Birch group is actively
anti-Communist. Its critics say
its approach and methods are
extreme. One of the society's
recent projects has been to
seek impeachment of Chief
Justice Earl Warren.
Hiestand, one of two House
members who have said they

Plan Fast Time
Salem-OIFD-Representatlves of Chamber of Commerce of
nine Willamette Valley cities voted informally to ask busi
nesses to open an hour earlier, but a big Salem department
store indicated it would remain on standard time schedule
unless there, was unanimity.

Friday aboard "Freedom 7"
as "nearly perfect."
In what respects was it less
than perfect? For one thing,
the Mercury man - In - space
cabin flew 302 miles down
the Atlantic missile range In
stead of the planned 290 miles.
That means the Redstone
booster engine ran a split sec
ond longer than scheduled,
adding 12 miles to the flight
distance.
For another, a light that
should have glowed when the
retrorockets were jettisoned
toward the end of the trip
didn't come on when it should.
No Actual Trouble
Shepard found this worri
some but not for long. Through
his periscope and cabin win
dows he saw pieces of strap
flying past which indicated
the rockets had separated.
To be on the safe side, he
operated manual controls over

Shepard said he had rec
ommended some changes In
the system as a result of the
flight. He did not say what
they were. But he said they
' were minor and very few In
number" and would cause no
delay In the remainder of the
