encouraged to go to Lausanne for the purpose of
looking at movie stars!
I recently made a spot check in Lausanne. Only
George .Sanders was actually in Switzerland.
Richard Burton was on Broadway, starring in
"CameloL" Anthony Quinn was also on Broadway,
starring in "Becket." Noel Coward had fled to
Jamaica to escape the Swiss winter. Deborah Kerr
had quit the ski slopes of Klosters to make a film
in England, and Peter Ustinov was in London.
William Holden was in Africa, at the Mount
Kenya Safari Club. Yul Brynner was in France.
Mel Ferrer was in Paris. Audrey Hepburn was in
New York. Jack Palance was in London.
Having creator intellectual resources than most
actors, Richard Burton has been able to turn
his house at Celigny into a home instead of an
income-tax excuse. As his wife Sybil said, "We re
alized that this was to be our home, and our chil
dren's home, perhaps for the rest of our lives.
So instead of seeing nobody but actors, we made
friends with our Swiss neighbors. We worked at
the language and spent our evenings in the nearest

of the soccer team from Talbot, Burton's home .

now having a guesthouse built. "We can make
up a spare guest bed in the car if necessary," says
Burton, "but I'm the one who Usually sleeps there."
Sybil Burton says, "We love it in Switzerland."
