Don't learn They Know
A "school" of ilsh has little
to do with education, but in
the great classroom of Nature
, it does seem to have a great
(33'
deal of Importance.
. They lust know that they
" must huddle to gether in a
compact mass we call
"school" at the first sign of
- danger.
To hurry into a huddle is
often a complex maneuver
Some of the small try must
come from some little distance
in order to get in with the
rest. Some species .of fish
' never get entirely over this
i schoolins habit or instinctive
action. Other species, after the
' kindergarten phase of tneir
lives, go separate ways, alone.
. But with hardly an excep-
tion, baby fish, even the new
lv hatched ones, go into a hud
din and re-form after being
separated. Even a passing
. shadow above them will send
them Into a tight little mass.
A sudden vibration in the
home waters will panic them
instantly, causing them to
"school."
Only Supposition
It is believed that schooling
is a protective action. A prea
atory fish slashes into a school
and succeeds in gulping down
a few of the frightened mem.
bers, but if the fish were not
in a school, a hungry preaaior
could pick them off one by
one. 1
By watching a "school of
minnows" closely, it is impos
sible to pick out the leader, or
know for certain that tnere is
a "head man." Although there
may be hundreds or even
' thousands of small fish in a
school, no single one appears
to be the leader, no one, ex
cept Nature herself seems to
be "in charge." The entire
group reacts instantly, as if
they were all controlled by
the same lever.' -
It would be easy to under
stand if one or two proceeded
at the head of the school, and
the rest followed their actions,
but they react as one. The en
,tlre school will turn to the
right or the left', up or down,
or even In any direction at a
definite slant, as it they all
knew ahead of time just what
: course they were going to
pursue.
It there's a signal, we won
der how they all got it at the
same instant.
Return To Group
Should a predatory fish
slash into the school, scatter
.' ing the members in every di
rection, each darts away in a
. mad scramble, but immediate
ly turns and forms back into
a compact group.
Should the school approach
. an obstruction, whereby only
a narrow passage leads in the
general direction they are
heaued, they flow out of line,
but get back into the huddle
again as soon as room is available.
Because they all turn at the
same time, it would seem to
indicate the same Impulse ac
tivates everyone exactly alike.
- About the most obvious ex.
planatton, at the present time,
is that sense perception, a 're
action no one yet knows very
. much about, operates the en
tire complicated arrangement.
132 Permits Are
Issued in April
Permits totaling $597,410
were issued during April by
the city of Medford building
department, according to
Building Director O. R. Mc-
Neel's monthly report.
Nearly half of the total val
uation was for new home con
struction. The department is
sued 18 permits for new
homes having a cumulative
valuation of $225,500.
Last month's total com
pares to the $680,389 worth
of permits that were issued
during the same month in
I960, and the $333,802 worth
of permits that were issued
during the same period in
1959.
Other permits Issued last
month were two for new
businesses, valued together at
$241,000; and seven permits
to remodel or repair busi
nesses. A total of 132 permits
were issued during the
month.
The building department
' made 1,138 Inspections dur
ing April, and collected S3,
S40 in building fees, accord
ing to the report.
