A woman wrlte to tell me
how grateful she is for my
article telling how "Even Ani

Birth."' She
tells me that
some 20 years
ago when she
was a girl she
married a man
whom i h e

Aivarea capea orimi-
nal. During the next several
years he kept getting into
trouble with the law, until at
last she couldn t stand It any
more and divorced him. All
by herself she has brought up
her three children. - Two of
them are like her, and are all
right; but the boy, ever since
he was small has been wild
just like his father whom he
resembles in many ways. In
his early teens he was already
burglarizing stores," stealing
cars, and doing other things
that causing him to be ar
rested. ! .
Recently, the mother spoke
to the probation officers about
heredity but they, said there
was no such thing. Typical of
men indoctrinated with a cer
tain very popular brand of
modern psychiatry was the
statement of these men that

the boy was bad because he
had been , brought up by a
bad father whose behavior he
had copied. The woman says
she didn't bother to tell these
men who "knew it all" with
out talking to her that not
only had the lad never seen
his father but he did not even
know that his father was
criminal. The mother has
never cared to tell him what
his father was like.
This Is a case with which to
answer the stock responses of
many psychiatrists When told
of criminality runlng through
a family. I have known a num
ber of such cases in which
criminal lad never knew his

criminal: grandfather. : There
are German statistics avail

Many Patients Discharged
From Mental Hospital
Of late, it has been encour-
aelnif to see that many pa
tients are Being aiscnargea
from mental hospitals, " but
also a few bad features' are to
be noted.- Dr. C. J. Ruilmanp
of Austin. -Tex., recently
pointed out that about a fifth
of the patients now Being ad
mitted to mental hospitals are
over 65 years of age, while
only one - fifteenth of those
belntr discharged are in this
old-age group. This means that
rapidly the populations ol
mental hospitals are going to
be made up mainly of old and
mentally senile and confused
people. .
Also, what Is sad is that in a
mental hospital a third of the
patients who were discharged
sooner or later came back in.
Many found that they could
be more comfortable within
the protecting walls: of the
hospital, and some had to re
turn because, once outside,
