A Defective Child? ; "
A mother writes from Bra

tective child to the United
States in the
hope of find
ing a cure.
The doctors in
Brazil have
told her,
doubtless
truthfully,
that no one
can make
child such as

properly.
There are a number of ob
jections I have to this wom
an's making the trip. First;
she may waste thousands of
dollars that she should keep
for the education of two or
three very bright children.
Second; she will insist on doc
tors' wasting thousands of dol
lars on useless "complete ex
aminations" because' she
thinks that a very thorough
examination ' will somehow
lead to a cure. It won't.
Third; ' it the doctor, who
with a glance at the child,
knows all he needs to know
about his or her mental re
tardation, or ; spasticity, or
dwarfism, says kindly to the
woman, "Don t ask me to ex
amine the child; I don't need
to; and I don't enjoy taking
your money for nothing," the
mother will think he is ah ig
noramus, or he is lazy or he
does not like her, and she
promptly will hunt up another
physician.
Diagnosis on Street
It is unfortunate that today
thousands of people do not
know that a good doctor often
can make the proper diagno
sis with a glance at the pa-

tient or the answers to two or
three questions. Such a good
doctor can make many a diag
nosis as he sees a person walk
ing on the street. I was
trained long ago by my senior
partner who, as we would be
walking perhaps to the restau
rant for luncheon, would ask
me, ".What is wrong with that
man, there across the street,
bent over forward a bit, walk
ing with short steps, and not
swinging his arms?" And I
would , say, "Parkinson's dis
ease." The next man scuffing
his right foot, would be recog
nized as having had a stroke;
another, with two canes, we
would recognize as sufferine
from nervous syphilis; a man
walking in a peculiar way
would obviously have "a pok
er spine," made rigid by
certain form of arthritis: an
other had a stiff knee, or an
old polio, or wooden leg; a
boy would be a spastic, a eirl
swinging from side to side as
she walked would have con
genital dislocation of the hips;
and a seedy-looking man had
obviously come up from skid
row to panhandle for the day.
Then might come by a man
with a pinched, anxious-look
ing reddish face; with a round
"barrel chest" and the muscles
in front of his neck standing
out. rny Chief would ask.
"What's he got?" And I would
say an old chronic asthma.
Recently a patient entered
my office and It was no trick
at all to diagnose a little
tumor in the man's pituitary
gland-before I saw. him. He
had a raucous voice that is
peculiar to some men with
such a tumor.' I mention these
facts, not to brag; all, able
physicians diagnose many dis
eases at a glance; I mention
this type of diagnosing only
to strengthen the plea I here
make to every mother with a
defective child that If a doc
tor tells her he does not need
to make a big examination,
and does not want to take her
money to no purpose, she
must not think he is stupid
or careless; he Is a fine honest
man, and she had better listen
to what he says and do what
he tells her to do. He is right.
Many another doctor, from
mistaken ideas ot kindness,
will spend $150 examining
the child, and then will say,
"Keep hoping;" which means
that she will keep traveling
about until her money is gone.
