McCormick, the classy young
lefthander of the Giants, was
manager Alvin Dark's choice
to start against the Los An
geles Dodgers tonight in an
effort to make it two In a row
for San Francisco.
The old rivals from their
New York and Brooklyn days
met for the first tlme this sea
son Tuesday night. The Giants
got an excellent combined
pitching job from starter Jack
Sanford and reliefer Stu Mil
ler in chalking up a' 3-1 vic
tory. The Dodgers' Stan Williams
will oppose the Giants on the
strength of a 3-2 record against
them last year. McCormick,
however, was 4-1 against the
Dodgers in 1060, shutting
them out on three ocassions.
Tuesday's victory moved
the Giants past Los Angeles
by a few percentage points

Dodger starter Don Drysdale,
who held a lifetime 16-12
mark against the Giants.
"For a 3-1 game it was a
wild and wooly contest," Al
ston commented. "Drysdale
was wild or he wouldn't have
hit two. batters and walked
six men. Maybe an extra day's
rest was responsible, I don't
know." ,
Although the four-hit pitch
ing by Sanford and McCovey s
bat stood out for the Giants,
a great defensive play by
Willie Mays cut off a possible
Dodger rally in the seventh
when Los Angeles scored its
only run.
With one away and men on
second and third, Moon flied
to Mays who said the ball
spun erratically, but he made
the catch' and threw out the
Dodgers' : shortstop Maury
Wills at the plate for a double
play to end the inning.
"I doubt if I could do that
again," Mays said, "especially
with a fast man like Wills on
third."
Rookie second baseman
Chuck Hiller was the only
man aside from McCovey to
hit for extra bases, leading off
the first with a double and
getting another double in the
sixth.
Ron Perranoski and Larry
Sherry finished out the game
for Drysdale, who was charg
ed with the loss. Miller work
ed three innings in relief of
Sanford and did not give up a
hit.
