though I saw the child some
SO years ago, I can still see
the room and the bed; the
anxious parents, and the child,
so utterly miserable that she
lay as if half-conscious. Dur
ing, that whole day she had
said not a word in answer to
her mother's questions. Once
every hour or so she would
groan with abdominal pain
and . then she would retch
violently for a few minutes,
bringing up a little bile. Then,
again, she would lapse into
her sleepy state, and lie as if
almost dead.
At first, when 1 saw this
girl with a disease which I
had never seen before, I fear
ed she might have some ser
ious trouble in her abdomen-
something which should
quickly be operated on. But,
fortunately, the mother then
told of other exactly similar
spells which the girl had had.
They had lasted a day or two
and then, rather suddenly,
had cleared away. Then I
knew that the attack I was
seeing probably would quiet
down, too, and It did. I also
learned that the mother and
the ''father had each had a
severe form of migraine. Also,
I learned that the girl had
gotten her attacks after some
excitement, such as an exami
nation, or a school picnic.
Years later, I saw another one
of these girls, and because, by
then, I was sure of the clinical
picture, I begged the family
doctor not to operate. He
went ahead and explored the
girl's abdomen and found
nothing. The more I have seen
of this disease the surer I have
become that is a form of mi
graine, I have seen it clear
up entirely, just as the ten
dency to sick headaches often
does, when the girl reaches
the age of twenty or so.

the interval between spells
lengthens until the child has
one only once in five or six
months. What interests me
much in the letter before me
is this mother's statement that
her child began to get these
spells when she was seven
months old. They have kept
coming, suddenly, at any time
of day. The girl is now 13
years of age and is still get
ting the spells about twice a
year. ,
If I had such a child under
my care, I would give the
mother some ampules contain
ing a solution of Gynergen,
and a hypodermic syringe. I
would teach her to give an
injection of the drug as soon
as a spell started. ,
This would be my main
hope of stopping a spell. In
adults with a severe migraine
this treatment will block the
spell in perhaps 85 per cent
of the cases. No medicine
taken by mouth can work,
once the nausea and retching
have set in. Then the stomach
will not absorb anything.
If any parents of a child
with this disease haye learned
of any other medicine which
will stop these spells, I will
be glad to hear of it. The
trouble Is that the malady
Is so rare that few men can
come to know it well from
personal experience.

Bill for Hatfield
Aides Introduced
Salem - (UPD - A bill to give
Gov; Mark Hatfield four new
special executive assistants
was introduced Monday in the
Senate.
It appeared to be a tacit
admission that the governor's
reorganization program is not
going to get very far.
Sponsors of the bill were
headed by Sens. Walter Pear
son (D-Portland) and Anthony
Yturri, minority leader from
Ontario.
Both have been supporters
of the reorganization plan.
Pearson has said several times
it would accomplish the same
coordination and efficiency in
some areas that the governor
could accomplish by himself
with more executive aids.
Duties of the new aides
would include liaison work
with governmental agencies.
