In the last few months I
have been saddened and dis
tressed to receive dozens of
letters from
mothers who
tell me of
child, usually
3 a boy, who is
causing a
great deal of
trouble, both
at home and
at school.
Often, the
mother says
the child will' not accept any
discipline either from her or
his teacher. Sometimes at
school he has been so trouble-
some or vicious that he has
been expelled. In some cases
he has gotten into so much
mischief that the police have
had to take a hand.
In the worst cases the child
has such a violent temper and
is so fond of beating up small
children that the mother feels
It is only a matter of time un
til he maims or kills some
one. In some cases the child
steals from stores, or at night
he "borrows" a car and drives
around town in it until per
haps he has a wreck. In the
really serious cases the mo
ther says she cannot see that
the boy has any sign of con
science - he shows absolutely
no desire to grow up into a
useful citizen. "In other cases
the boy seems occasionally to
want to reform, but he cannot
stick to his resolves; he keeps
running around with a gang,
made' up of boys much like
himself, :
Sometimes the mother says
that she fears that the boy is
Just like one of his uncles who
was a good-for-nothing, or a
violent - tempered man who
was so inclined to fight with
everyone that he could never
hold a Job. In other cases, the
mother tells me that one or

seemed to be normal, happy,
and well-adjusted until he had
a very severe attack of mea
sles (probably with brain
fever) and it is since then that
he has been getting into one
scrape after another. Many
mothers tell of children who
are problems at school be
cause they cannot seem to
concentrate; they try to read
but get nothing out of it. The
teacher often says, He is
bright enough,' but he sits for
much of the day and sort of
dreams." i
The mothers of these chil
dren write, begging me to tell
them what to do, where can
they take the boy and get
help for a fee that they can
pay? Usually, the kind,,, old
family doctor says that the
problem is beyond him. I am
sorry to say that as yet even
most of the psychiatric work
ers who try to help seem to
have little knowledge of the
problem.
when I read their articles
about it, I am often saddened
to see that they do not seem
to know the big difference be
tween a delinquent child who
might be helped, and a psy-
chopathically delinquent boy
who was born without a con
science and usually cannot be
given one.
Many of the psychiatrists
who try for months or years
to help these youngsters seem
never to have read Dr. Her-
vey Cleckley's wonderful
book on psychopathic delln-
quents-"The Mask of Sanity"
(Mosby). Neither have they
read . "The Psychopathic De
linquent and Criminal" by
Dr. George N. Thompson
(Charles Thomas). They have
not read Dr. Melltta Schmlde-
berg's papers in which, after
much trying to help psycho
pathic criminals, she says It
is usually a waste of time be
cause they don't want to be
bothered by a psychiatrist
Also, as many a mother
writes me, her psychiatrist has
spent perhaps a very expen
sive year treating their child,
without making any effort,
first, to get electro-encephalo
grams made to see if perhaps
the boy inherited a tendency
to his uncle's queer blackouts
and his violent temper. Worse
yet, in many a case, when the
mother asks - the doctor to
have electroencephalograms
made, he refuses, and says
he has no use for such tests.
I have here on my desk
many letters recently receiv
ed from mothers who tell me
that when, after much effort,
hunting around for help, they
got electroencephalograms
made, they found that the
child was not Just "bad," and
he was not full of Freudian
sexual ideas; he had either a
selzureless type of epilepsy.

sles. In such cases, treatment
with Dexedrine sometimes
helps spectacularly. In a later
