WILL WONDERS NEVER CEASE?
Amphibious Auto Takes Writer
For Ride (or Cruise) on River
By DICK WEST
, 'Washington - (UPD - The
march of progress has set such
a fast pace this week that I
am beginning
to run out of
adjectives and
breath.
On Monday,
it was an elec
tronic "teach
ing machine"
that had m e
straining for
s u perlatives.
west On Tues day,
mine eyes beheld the unveil
ing of a new model space suit.
And Wednesday, which I
shall now discuss, found me
out on the Potomac river
taking a demonstration ride in
"the sports car that swims."
- I plan to spend the rest of
the week asking myself if
wonders will never cease;
The ride on the river came
about through the courtesy, or
persuasion, of the makers of
'.'Amphicar," an a m phibious
automobile soon to go on the
market. ,
Mildly Amazing
The vehicle is, I must say,
mildly amazing. It can be
driven on land or, with no ad
vance preparation, used as a
power boat..
On land, it looks like one
of the new compact converti
bles commonly seen on the
streets. In the water, its ap
pearance is somewhat more
difficult to describe.
Perhaps the best way to
describe it is to say that in the
water it looks like a new com
pact convertible that has just
made a wrong turn. , .
At any rate, the driver can
switch from a dry ride to a
wet cruise .without even put
ting the top up, unless of
course, it starts to rain.
For the press showing here,
the "Amphicar" people filled
the back seat with a cargo of
CARE packages. In the front
seat, as a passenger, they
placed Miss Marcella -Wak-smunski,
who recently won
some kind of beauty contest..
The significance of this ar
rangement eluded me, but if I
ever receive a CARE package,
I hope Miss Waksmunski is
in it.
Crosses River ,
When all was ready, the
Amphicar headed down a boat
ramp and drove off across the
river, headlights awash. In its
wake came a launch filled
with photographers, who kept
shouting at Miss Waksmunski
to wave at them.'
While they were gone, an
Amphicar official told me that
the vehicle gets 32. miles to
the gallon on land, and that
it is being manufactured in
West Germany, and that it
will sell for $3,395. . -j.-.O
Life preservers, I assume,
will be optional equipment. .
I asked the official if the
company would take trade
ins. That will be up to the in
dividual . dealers, he replied.
- "Will the buyers trade in
cars or boats?" I inquired. He
said that question had never
arisen before.' ' -
After the maiden voyage,
Miss Waksmunski 1 gave me
her seat and ' I took a spin
with"1 the driver. In mld-

stream, he discovered that the
radiator needed water.
Motoring on a river is all
right, I guess, but , I kept
thinking it would be a bad
place to have to change a tire.

Horn Rmdy Book
The common cold, a subject
of much research by the medi
cal profession today, was con
sidered a malady difficult to
prevent or cure as early as
1783, according to a home
remedy book at the museum.
Domestic Medicine" states
that "No age. sex or constitu
tion is exempted from the
disease, neither is it in the
power of any medicine or regi
men to prevent it." The book
warns that "Many attempt to
cure a cold, by getting drunk.
But this, to say no worse of
it, is a very hazardous experiment.".
The home , remedy book is
one of many rare books that
have been given or loaned to
the museum. "Though cargo
of pioneer wagon trains across
the plains to Jackson county
was of necessity confined,
mainly, to articles that would
assist in providing food and
shelter, it is obvious that early
pioneers considered reading
for information and pleasure
necessity of their new
homes," m e s e u m officials
stated.
