Ever Hear Tree Frogs
Singing in The Rain?
Because he usually lives In
a tree, some folks call him
the squirrel tree frog. He has
suction cups on his toes, flew-
absorbers on his stomach,
ereen oolorinc in his skin pig
ment, a light in his eyes, a
song in his heart.
For a little guy with just
three toes to a foot, he can ac
complish some remarkable
stunts in tree climbing, or
even walking calmly on a
sheer perpendicular surface.
It's all done with suction
cups. These highy developed
cups, with which the tree frog
is equipped, adhere readily to
any surface, rough, smooth,
irregular, or a combination of
all three.
Not Many Slips
Like his relatives, he gets
to the places where he wants
to go by jumping, but unlike
his relatives that live in
ponds, he lives in trees, and
does it dangerously. Without
a thought of danger he will
jump from . one limb to
another.
Hiding on a leaf or In a
crevice, he feeds on insects,
worms or anything thai
crawls, and Is small enough to
fit into his mouth. He changes
his color to match his sur
roundings. Usually he is a dell,
cat shade of leaf-green, with
a white or yellow stripe along
both sides ot his slender,
graceful body.
His skin is very soft, with
the shine of fine pottery. On
his little underside is a series
of fine pores that have a blot
ter-like action, absorbing wat
er from any wet surface. He
can take in his necessary
moisture at the same time he
is bug hunting. He has a
front-hinged tongue which he
unconsciously always keeps
covered with a sticky sub
stance to which the hapless
bug adheres.
Few people ever see. these
lllliputian frogs, In' spite of
the fact that they are rather
plentiful. More people are fa
miliar with his voice, for it is
the squirrel tree frog that
usually becomes enthusiasti
cally vocal just before a sum
mer shower. The male alone
has the voice. The little fe
male just sits nearby and en
joys his serenade.
Signal to Sing
One hot summer afternoon,
we watched as storm clouds
piled up overhead. The first
big drops fell at the same
instant that a wild tree-frog
chorus filled the air. They
had all' been waiting for the
signal and they responded
joyously. Even the downpour
failed to drown out the clam
or. For several minutes the
rain came down, then, as if
some mighty hand had turned
the handle, it stopped.
At the same second the frog
chorus stopped, as if their
calls and the rain were all at
tached to the same lever.
Later, the rain began again
and with it the tree-frog
serenade, almost keeping
time to the rhythm of the fall
ing water. There they all
were, hilariously, "singing in
the rain." '
