Eichmann Tells
Of Jewish Ties
Through Family

mann says he never was anti
Semitic and, in fact, was dis
tantly related to Jews through
his stepmother.
The text of a 400,000-word
statement he dictated into a
tape recorder after he was
flown to Israel from Argen
tina was released today.
Feels Sense of GuiU '
It revealed that he feels
some sense of guilt that the
Nazis killed six million Euro
pean Jews, but that he insists
the crime rests on the souls of
other men.
Some of his stepmother's
relatives, both men and
women,- married Jews, Eich
mann said. His "Aunt Dorshi"
was a Jewess and at the
height of the Nazi terror he
helped her daughter escape to
. Switzerland, he said.
Was Obeying Orders
Although this is a prosecu
tion, document, in part it
sounds like a plea for the de
fense. Eichmann seeks to jus
tify his conduct on the
grounds that he was a minor
officer obeying orders. Policy
was formed, he said, by Adolf
Hitler, Heinrich Himmler and
Reinhard Heydrich. All of
them are dead.
Eichmann said that after
visiting the extermination
camps in Poland he even pro
tested to his superior officers
against the killing of the
Jews. He said he was worried
about the effect of the holo
caust on the character of the
youth of Germany.

Sgt. Alvin York has claimed
for years he doesn't owe the
government "a dime." Today,
for the first time in 0. years,
Uncle Sam and the old Ser
geant see eye to eye.
Tax commissioner Mortimer
Caplin Wednesday accepted a
S25.000 check from Rep. Joe
L. Evins, (D-Tenn.) and the
government closed its books
on the World War I Medal of
Honor winner. '
York, now 73 and confined
to his bed in a small home in
Tennessee's mountain coun
try, had been involved in a
tax dispute over royalties he
received from the 1941 movie
"Sergeat York."
The Internal Revenue
Service accepted the $25,000
settlement on its $173,000
claim. The money was raised
through a fund drive to aid
York, one of the nation's most
celebrated war hearoes.
York, contacted here after
the settlement, said: "I'm
tickled to death to hear about
this - anybody would be. You
know, everylime somebody
makes the load of life a lit
tle lighter, it's good to hear
about it."
York is bedridden from a
series of strokes and said he
hadn't been feeling "too well"
recently. He has said all
along he doesn't owe the gov
ernment any back taxes.
DESEGREGATES POOLS
Miami -(UPD- The City 'of
Miami desegregated its five
public swimming pools Wed
nesday in line with a federal
court ruling recently upheld
bv the fifth U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals. "Any taxpayer
who seeks admission and pays
his fee, if any, and obeys the
rules must be admitted," City
Manager Melvin Reese told
the pool managers.
