Grant and Cottage Grove Capture Hayward Relays Championships

.' Eugene Favorites came
through in the Metropolitan
and Class A conflicts of the
Hayward relay track and field
meet here yesterday afternoon
as Grant of Portland and Cot
tage Grove were triumphant
by wide margins in this prep
thinclad carnival.
Grant, with firsts in the
440-yard, 880-yard and shuttle
hurdle relays and a tie for
first in the high Jump, rolled
up 60 15 points in the Metro
class. Hudson's Bay of Van
couver, Wash., was second
with 36V4. Cottage Grove's
Lions, with victories In the
discus, shot put, 880 and mile
relays, outdistanced its Class
A foes with 81. Bend was
next with 41. '
Tornado Takes Mil
... Medford, one-time perennial
champ in the biggest school
division, made its best finish
since last winning the Metro
four years ago. The Black
Tornado was fourth with 30V4,
. back of Marshfiel'd's 38 15.
Medford had one first as its
gang of Jack Lowery, Bob
Rix, Kent Blew and Bob Mc
Intyre took the mile event in
3:29.5
Crater, always a contender
In Class A, was third this year
with 37V4. Ashld with 24
was fifth behind North Bend's
29V4.' The Comets of Crater
tied with West Linn and Bend
at 16 feet 6 inches for first
place in the high jump. Bob
Voris took the high hurdles
at :15.2 for Ashland, beating
the Metro winning time.
Grants Pass, which last
week won the Rogue relays at
Medford, was 14th in the Met
ro division with 8 710. Kla
math Falls had two points.
Davies Sets Mark
In Metro yesterday the dis
cus record fell to Dave Davies
of Hudson's Bay with 164-1.
Jefferson's Larry Grant, Dick
Daniel and Roy Taylor com
bined in the broad jump for
a new mark of 65-2. Bryan
Klotz, David Douglas, became
new record holder in the pole
vault with 13-3.
In Class A Cottage Grove
set marks of 149-3 in the shot
tut and 3:33.9 in the mile.
Jesuit set a new standard of
8:19.6 in the two-mile.
Mfidfod took third in the
shot put with 140-11, third in
the 880 with 1:32.5, tied for
third in the shuttle hurdles
with :34.7, and tied for fifth
in the 440 with :44.9. Mike
Hood was fifth in the high
hurdles. Grants Pass took
third in the mile and tied
with Medford for fifth in the
440. Vic Van Koten of the
Cavemen tied for third at
11-6 in the pole vault. Allen
Phillips, Klamath Falls, was
fifth in the javelin with 179

and 18th holes Saturday to
take a two-stroke lead in the
$22,500 Greater Greensboro
Open Golf tournament.
Souchak fired a 69 for a
54-hole total of-six-under par
207. The Grossinger, N.Y.,
golfer and Billy Maxwell of
Dallas, Tex., were tied going
into Saturday's round. How
ever, Maxwell fired a 71.
Three strokes off the pace
at 210 was Charles Sifford, a
Negro golf pro from Los An

ter the first nine holes yester
day with a two-under-par 33.
He shot birdies on the third
and ninth holes ' while Sou

birdied the fourth.
Doug Sanders of Ojal,
Calif., and Buddy Sullivan of
Yuba City, Calif., were even
par after 54 holes with 213 s.
Sifford, who put on a star
tling putting exhibition the
first day, had trouble on the
greens Saturday. "I had a lot
of chances," Sifford said, "but
the putts just wouldn't drop."
He is the first Negro to
play in the G.G.O. and the
first of his race ever to com
pete in a PGA co-sponsored
tournament in the south. He
hit 16 greens, missing one and
four.

dominant small high school in
Oregon track and field here
Friday by capturing the Class
C championship in the annual
Hayward relays.
Scappose won the Class B
crown for the second year.

Ashland - George Keil, 35,
has been named head basket
ball coach at Ashland High
school.
, Along with coaching duties,
Keil will teach lour mathe
matics classes and will have
one study hall and one prepa
ration period.
A veteran of 11 years of
coaching, Keil will come here
from Nampa, Idaho, where he
has been head hoop mentor.
His teams have ranked high
in a league which has includ
ed Pocatello, Boise, Idaho
Falls and American Falls
schools.
He attended University of
Utah and Idaho State college
and was described as an out
standing athlete at both
schools.
Keil and his family will
come to Ashland after he
completes summer school at
Untversity of Idaho. He and
Mrs. Keil have two daugh
