LANDSCAPING IMPORTANT For a beautiful patio, land
scaping is all-important. At least a small spot of shade is
suggested by the American Association of Nurserymen. De
pending on what use the patio is planned for, you may want
to plant shrubs on one or more sides for privacy, flowers
for color, evergreens for year-round greenery and perhaps
a few pottted plants.
Floribunda Said Prominent Rose
Whenever there is garden
ing tallcj Floribundas are al
most certain to figure promi
nently in the discussion.
And well they should, be
cause this new and' fascinating
race of roses makes it possible .
to do with roses many things
which - were heretofore not ;
possible. It has happened fast.
Almost overnight, these
new cluster - flowered roses .
have become . about as im
portant as our standard gar-,
den roses of the past fifty
years, the Hybrid Teas. Just
consider that even the name
"floribunda" is less than ten ,
years old. .
The reasons for all this are
simple ones. First,- few if any
plants have : the ability to
bloom so freely over such a
long, period of time. Month
after month during the entire
spring, summer and fall, the
plants are covered by big
bursts - of flower clusters
which follow one another in
rapid succession.
Secondly, Floribundas once
planted are permanent. They
are quite hardy and do not
need a lot of special care out
side of requiring a bit more
water and fertilizer.

There are five principal,
causes for the failure of the .
home, lawn regardless of
where in the country the
lawn is located. These causes
in order of their importance
are: . , ;
1. Poor andor improper
seed. -;. .
2. Lack of fertilizing.
3. Insufficient watering.. : .
4. Improper mowing.
5. Lack of weed control.
The best type of a grass
seed to shop for is one that
is a mixture of grasses, an
all - perennial mixture that
will permit all the varieties
contained in the package to
grow year after year.
There are countless types
and variations of grasses and
mixtures. For example, in the
South there are Bermuda, St. -.
Augustine, Centipede, Carpet
Bahia, Zoysia and many oth-
ers. ' -Popular
Types -
In the northern portion of
the United States some of the
more popular types are the
Bents, Blue-grasses, Fescues
and others. Many of the mix
tures available, whether in
the North or South, contain
dicondra which although it
: is not a true gress, substan
tially contributes to a success
ful and attractive ground cov-
' er. .v.
The best approach is to dis
cuss your seed requirements
with a local established gar
den supply dealer or profes
sional nurseryman. All seeds
purchased from recognized
brand manufacturers will list
on the container all the varie
ties and types contained .in
the mixture. This eliminates
any guesswork or misunder
standing before the seed is
planted.
The proper and timely fer
tilization of the lawn is very
important to its uniform
growth and success. Periodic
fertilizing with a good brand
is recommended. Here again,
sound professional advise
from local dealers and nur
serymen Will provide the
home gardener with the an
swer. There are fast acting
', high nitrogen content ferti
lizers, and those which act
slower but produce long-lasting
results.

More and more home gar
deners are finding out that
inadequate as well as exces
sive watering are extremes
that- represent a principal
cause for the failure of the
lawn... :, '
The soil should not, at any.
time, "be allowed to become
completely dry. Bear in mind,
however, that this does not
mean it should be soaked or
soggy all the time, for this
will tend to breed fungi."
A soft, saturation watering
each day during the seasonal
dry spells' is recommended.
Actually, except in drought
areas, one good saturation
watering a week where the
water can sink down at least
six inches, will be adequate.
And' good water drainage is
all a. part of watering effi
ciency. You don't want too
fast a runoff, nor' a situation
where the water collects in
depressions.
Mowing Is Key
The mowing of the lawn is
the key to maintenance and
continuance of a truly fine
and attractive ground "cover.
In the South it is recommen
ded that Bermuda and other
mixtures be mowed to a
inch cut. Bent and Blue gras
ses should be cut at a height
of one inch. Blue grass fes
cue mixtures prosper best
when mowed at a height of
1V4 inches. For the broader
bladed Blue grasses, or the
so-called "playground" grass
es,' the cut should be about
two inches.
Allowances will have to be
made in those areas where
summer scorching is a prob
lem. Here the home gardener
must avoid cutting the grass
, too frequently and too close.
. A once a week mowing In
summer months is generally
; sufficient. However, in the
spring months, two mowings
a week are usually necessary.
" Weed, Control
,v . Weed control used to mean
.. long hours on ' your knees
with a knife and a basket
digging out dandelions. To
day, there is a wide variety
of proven weed killers avail
able for the control and elim-
- ination of almost every weed
you are apt to find in your
lawn.
Grass also is subjected to
fungus, such as leaf spot. And
there are damaging insects,
the most common of which '
are grubs, chinch bugs, cut
worms, skipper bugs and lawn. .
- moths. Pest and insect con
trol, can be achieved by use
of the special lawn sprays
manufactured by various lead-'
ing companies. Some of thes
sprays are combinations of
fungicides and insecticides de
signed to arrest the infection
and remove the insects source
of food.' .
