Use Dwarf Trees
If you have only a small
space for your home orchard,
you can still enjoy a wide se
lection of fruit,, by planting
dwarf trees, says the Ameri
can : Association of Nursery-
men.
Dwarf trees need to be set
only ten to 12 feet apart. A
space 30 feet square will con
tain, nine dwarf trees with a
fruit harvest sufficient for
four or five people.
For temperate climates,' ap
ples, pears, peaches, plums
and cherries provide an across
the board selection. In the
case of all fruit trees, two
varieties of each type of fruit
are desirable, and actually
necessary when planting plum
and cherry. trees. t
Most dwarf trees will bear,
the second year so you don't '
have to wait eight or ten years
to get f ruit.-
Strawberries can be planted
between the trees -if they are
kept cultivated, with bush "
fruits at one side of the small
orchard. . ; -
The care of : dwarf fruit
trees, including spraying, is
simple enough, since these
sprays annually is usually suf
ficent - once in early spring,
when dormant, just before
buds break out; a second 'me
during the later part of flow
ering period as the fruit be
gins to set, and then a month
or so later.
