couraged to work to help al-
leviate East Germany's press
ing labor shortage.

If the child is small enough
-four months to about a year-
, and-a-half - the nursery will
care for it night and day,
six days a week. The mother
picks up the child on Satur
day night when she finishes
work and brings him back
on Monday.
Children from one-and-a
half to about six can be
in the nurseries eight hour!

Sage Was Believed
To Bring Wisdom

man, he "was as bald as a

is as bald as ever.
Die Hard
Such superstitions die hard
The common garden herb,
with the square stems and the
wooly leaves, known as
sage" has figured rjrettv
prominently in various
"cures" for human ailments,
for many centuries. The wisest
men of the old fcoman Emnlre
believed they acquired their
wisdom by eating generously
of sage. We still say a man of
great wisdom, is a "sage."
The old Romans even
thought the eating of sage
would prolong life. Too, their
meals were pretty tasteless af
fairs, so copious amounts of
sage added zest to the food.
The sage herb, a member of
the mint family, was native
to Europe; there, over a per
iod of centuries, it found
many medicinal uses, as well
as a seasoning for food. One
of the most troublesome dis
eases of ancient .times was
asthma. A great percentage of
tne population was affected.
at one time or other, with
this Illness.
Here, too, sage was believed
to be the remedy. The leaves
were dried and smoked in
pipes. Unearthed ruins have
brought to light many of
uiese oia objects, but archeol-
ogists believe the pipes were
used for sage-leaf smoking, as
tobacco was not used at that
early age. '
The valuable sage plant, as
well as the dried leaves, were
transported to many coun
tries, Much later the sage
plant was introduced to Amer
ica. It became a part of every
herb garden. .
Sage-tea was standard treat
ment for ague, chills; and var
ious other diseases. It also was
supposed to be beneficial for
"upset stomachs."'
The ancients believed that
sage, along with another old
herb called "rue" would, by "
growing close together, keep
toads away from the garden.
If the eating of sage could '
have made those old timers
wiser, they should have eaten
more of it, for they were
pretty stupid, as a toad in a 1
garden would have been a ,
pretty valuable a d d i t i o n; "
would have done more good"
in fact, than a tankful of sage
tea on a bald head.
Durno Points To
Damage by Floods
Washington IDPD - Rep.
Edwin R. Durno (R-Ore.) said ;
Wednesday that floods last
November and February caus
ed damage exceeding $750,000
in the McKenzie River basin
of Oregon.
Durno said a preliminary
survey made by the Army En
gineers at his request showed
that damage downstream from
Leaburg totaled about $150,-
000 In November and reached
$600,000 during the Feruary
floods.
Mai. Gen. William F. Cas-
sidy,' director of civil works,
told Durno the damage would
have been more extensive if
It had not been for flood con
trol works already built in
the river basin. ' -
Funds to repair most of the
damage to revetments, esti
mated at $66,000, are avail
able, Cassldy said. But bank
protection work in other areas
of major damage would cost
$250,000. Such funds would
have to be appropriated. '
