22U Elizabeth Celebrates First of 2 Birthdays 21st
London - HUD - Queen Ellz
beth II of Britain is the only
. womtn in the world who le
gitimately c e 1 e b r a tes two
birthdays each year.
The one she must admit to
on her ' birth certificate is
l April 21. The other one is an
affair of state and comes in
June. .
r This year the Queen turns
35, and much too publicly to
kid anyone that she s 20. She s
a trim, well-preserved , 35, a
woman of grace and charm
and a deep beauty that shines
, from lovely . blue eyes and a
magnificent complexion. She
is more a handsome woman
than a pretty one, but most
Britons think, she s beautiful.
' She is one of the richest
women in ,the world with a
personal fortune that has been
estimated at more than $150,
: 000,000, and! receives an an
nual allowance of $1,330,000
of which $168,000 is regarded
as her personal income. The
rest goes for. entertainment,
travel expenses, household op
eration and the like.
" But it's unlikely any wom
an works harder for her mon
ey than this wife, mother and
queen. She has already' 'had
t a .exhausting six-week trip
.t'tis year with 'her husband
I rince Philip to India; Pakis
tan, Nepal and Iran and now
is about to take off on a state
' It to Italy and a courtesy
.It to Pope John, When she
not traveling she is engaged
rminably and constantly
i formal, dinners, parties,
.atlons and, though a rul
! symbol rather than a rul
, -e is daily in touch with
rnment affairs, entailing
f t deal of reading and
station. Added to all this
she is a devoted wife and
mother who takes excellent
care of her family.
Dedicated Woman .': j
Fabulously wealthy though
she is, and comfortably though
she lives, Queen Elizabeth is
not to be pictured as a woman
living in ease and luxury, the
envy of every housewife. She
is a dedicated, hard-working
woman whose average work
ing day would be the horror
of any labor union.
So far as her family is con
cerned, April 21 is "birthday1
for the queen, That's when
she gets her cake and pres.
ents.'", :;,?.. .
Birthdays in the royal fam
ily are like birthdays in most
families. In the morning, du
ties ' permitting, the . family
gathers around the breakfast
table and the "birthday child"
gets her cards, flowers from
friends, presents from all.
The queen on her birthday
usually spends the day doing
what she enjoys most - with
her horses and out in the

Badminton, watching the fa
mous horse trails. It's an oc-1
casion for wearing old tweeds
and a headscarf, and stout
shoes for tramping around in
the mud. Then in the evening
there's a dinner party. A few
days later the queen probably
will have her regular birth
day treat - of an .evening at
the theater. She generally
chooses a comedy or a detec
tive or mystery thriller.
Her "official" birthday
comes on the second Saturday
of June. The date is the same
for all British . kinds, and
queens . and . never changes
whatever the actual birth
date. On the sovereign's birth
day' the army honors its su
preme commander with the
trooping of the color, and- pa
rades and turnouts all over

is fixed on the theory there
are more apt to be sunny
skies then. .

' The big ceremony of the
day, always, is the trooping
of the color on the, Horse
Guards Parade in London. The
queen rides out from Buck
ingham Palace in the morning
escorted by Prince Philip and
other men of the royal family
in full uniform to review her
Guards in their scarlet tunics
and tall bearskin helmets. A
different regiment- is chosen
for the honor each year, and
the colors of that -regiment
are "trooped," or formally dis
played, before her. It is one
of the great . tourists . attrac
tions of the year ,in Britain.
After this ceremony, one of
the most colorful of all royat
military spectacles, the queen
rides back to the palace and
takes the salute' from the
gates as the Guards march
past her on their way back
to their nearby barracks along
Birdcage Walk. Finally the
royal party adjourns indoors,
to come out later on the pal
ace balcony to take the salute
of the Royal Air Force whose
planes roar in formation over
head. :- - " ':

Business When You Know How
Bechtold
Bf HENRY J. BECHTOLD
UPI Financial Editor ,
New York -, (UPD - It's s
simple when you know how,
And who knows how to run
a stock offer
ing better
than Ameri
can Telephone
& Telegraph
Co.?
This bluest
of the blue
chips brings
down the cur
tain Friday on
its eighth
stock offering since 1921, and
the outcome again will, be
termed "successful."
And successful is putting it
mildly when you consider the
results' of the 1956 offering,
when D9.8 per cent of the 5,
726,152 shares offered were
subscribed.
Through this latest offering
the close to two million AT&T
share-owners are able to buy
one share of stock for $86 for
every 20 shares held on Feb.
23. At the end of 1960 there
were 223,518,483 shares out
standing. . This has to be considered
quite a bargain when you con
sider that the stock recently
has been quoted around $130
a share, ' and that directors
contemplate a quarterly divi
dend payment of 90 cents per
share beginning , . in .July,
against 82V4 cents presently.'
And while an attractive
stock at a relatively cheap
price, , along ; with an- antici
pated dividend increase, are
enough to make any. stock
offering a success, the nation's
largest corporate entity has
a n o t.h e r unique advantage
going for it. 1 !
As huge as the offering is,
AT&T handles it all by itself,
requiring no outside under
writing as most other firms
do. This enables it to add mil
lions of extra dollars to its
proceeds which - are vitally
needed to build facilities re
quired to meet the public's
growing needs for communica
tion service. :!!'!: J.',,-.
The Bell System's 1961 con
struction budget is $2.5 bil
lion, the sixth consecutive
year that these expenditures
have exceeded $2 billion.
Handling such a huge stock
offering individually is no
small chore, however. It is a
full r time job for - several
months for more than. 2,600
extra persons using the most
modern business equipment.
These people do everything
from the routine checking and
recording jobs to answering
stockholder queries. Fortun
ately for the company many
of these part - timers have
worked on other AT&T offer-1
ings. . ... .' . ... i
While most of the transac
tions are handled through the
mail, a staff of some 80 people
has been dealing personally
with about 3,000 shareowners
a day since the offering began
in mid-March. ' . '
The 'shareowners seem to
like this face-to-face contact
with AT&T personnel. Many
remarked that it probably
would have been easier for
them to use the mails to sub
scribe, but they enjoyed the
opportunity to talk with com
pany employees. ;
The company has received
all kinds of negotiable paper
in payment for the subscrip
tions, including .checks, cash
and even government E bonds.
Many persons ' wanted to
leave signed blank checks and
have AT&T take care of their
transactions. ' The company is
reluctant to do' this at the
desk, but accepts such re
sponsibility when this hap
pens by mail.
And one man walked in
nonchalantly: with two war
rants belonging to a Long
Island woman, one for 99
rights and the other for, 160.
He refused to give his name
or accept a receipt, saying he
was sure AT&T would take
care of them properly..
This may all sound like a
hectic operation, but it's so
simple when you know how.
