Shock Kills More
Snake Victims
Than Venom

wiry Oklahoman who has
been bitten 14 different times
by poisonous snakes says
shock brought on by fear kills '
more snakebite victims than
the venom.
Bob Jenni, curator of rep
tiles at Oklahoma City's Lin
coln Park Zoo, said only about
3 per cent of persons bitten
by poisonous snakes in this
country die from the bites.
He has treated himself aft
er all but two of his bites and
given emergency treatment to
11 other persons for poisonous
bites. Jennl has been struck
most often by rattlesnakes,
which he catches in the South
west. , Twice snakes from
South America bit him. He
also has been bitten by a
copperhead, water moccasin
and African cape cobra.
Jenni said only four vari
eties of poisonous snakes are
native to the United States
rattlesnake, water moccasin
or cottonmouth, copperhead
and coral snake.
"Drop for drop, coral snake
venom is more deadly than a
rattlesnake's," Jenni said.
"But the western diamond
back rattler is the greatest
killer because of its wide
range in the United States."
Neuro-Toxlc : i
He said coral snake venom
is neuro-toxlc, acting on a
human's nervous system, but
the venom of the nation's oth
er poisonous snakes is hemo
lytic and attacks the blood.
Jenni said snakes are most
active when the air temper
ature is 75 to 90 degrees. "In
the spring, snakes will start
coming out of their winter
quarters when the day-night
temperature averages about
58 degrees," he said. "And
where you find one snake,
you can probably find sev
eral."' .
: He advises wearing boots
in snake country, but rely
more on your eyes to keep
from stepping on snakes. '
"If you happen to come
upon a snake, the best thing
to do is stop, then calmly
leave by a clear exit,". Jennl
said. "Contrary to common .
belief, poisonous snakes in
this' country will not chase
you."
Jennl Method
This is the method Jennl
uses against a snake bite:
1. Place a band near the
wound, between it and the
heart - tight enough to slow
the flow of blood back to the
heart.: -,.-.
2. With a sterile blade,
make cuts in the direction of
the veins over each fane punc
ture deep enough to allow
free bleeding. Incisions should
not be more than inch
wide nor more than 3i inch
deep, and should not be made
into veins, arteries or tendon.
3. Apply suction for at least
four hours. If the mouth has
no cuts in or around it. it
can be used to draw out the
venom. ,
4. Move the constrictins
band as swelling increases.
o. Watch for shock. If the
victim shows abnormal color
ing, pupil dilation, or suffers
nausea or uncontrolled shak
ing, keep him warm and place
his head lower than most of
the body so blood will reach
it. Give him mild stimulants,
such as coffee or tea.. ;
Jenni said secondary aid
can be given if it will be a
long time before the victim
can be treated by a doctor.
That would , Involve, placing
cold packs on the wound for
nine minutes, waiting a min-
ute to see if the band should
be moved, then placing hot
pacKs, men repeating the
process. He said hot packs
should not be used on coral
snake bites, or effects of the
venom would be worse.
