is the new Masters champion
only because Arnold Palmer
is human after all.
The new king of golf is only
five feet, seven inches tall and
weighs .', "about 152 pounds
soaking wet," but he has the
touch of Midas on the greens,
The golden touch would not
have been enough to win
Monday, however, had not
Palmer, noted for his super
human , finishes, faltered on
the 72nd and final hole just
when it looked like he had
his second straight Masters
championship all locked up,
Palmer summed up his
downfall In a nutshell.
-"I thought sixes happened
only to other people, he said
sadly, thus proving that he
too, can fall down in the
clutch like anyone else.
Seen Dramatic Finishes
The Masters has seen some
fantastic , finishes in its 25
playlngs, but none to rival the
drama and suspense of that
72nd hole.
Here was the stituation:

pounded his way to a bloody
and unanimous 10-roun deci

in 1960. -
The new era ,of expansion,
launched Monday when the
new - Washington : Senators
made a 4-3 losing debut
against the Chicago White Sox
in the nation's captial, gets

For the most part, the opening-day
pitching assign
ments were entrusted to such
old hands as Robin Roberts,
Warren Spahn, Whltey Ford
and Bob Friend.
But the inaugural day line
ups also will Include approxi
mately 16 rookies eager to
live up to the impressive
showing made Monday ,- in
Washington by a presidential
rookie named. John Fitzger
ald Kennedy.
President Kennedy made
one of the longest, ceremonial
tosses on record to start the
new season and then sat back
among the crowd of 26,725
to wach manager Mickey Ver
non and his novice ball club
take on the White Sox.
The Senators promptly
showed the President and fel
low fans a giveaway program
that Congress never would
have dared to pass. The Wash
ington club made four errors
to lose the game and become
the first club ever to occupy
10th place in the American
League standings.
Washington led 3-2 atfer six
Innings only to have first
baseman Dale Long make a
throwing error in the seventh
and catcher Pete Daley fol
low suit in the eighth to pre
sent the White Sox with the
runs that won the game. Re
liever Frank Baumann ' re
ceived credit for the Chicago
victory while Dick Donovan
was the loser.
Back to . the Pirates and
Yankees: Both clubs will stand
pat with last season's lineups,
at least for a while.
The Pirates, who oddly are
receiving only lukewarm sup
port to repeat as NL pennant
winners, open against the San
Francisco Giants on the West
Coast. Bob Friend, 18-12 last
season, Is. due to start, for the
Pirates. "
Sam Jones (18-14) gets the
call for the Giants, who launch
the season with four new fac
es. These are manager Al
Dark; third baseman Harvey
Kuenn, obtained in a winter
trade with Cleveland; and
rookines Charlie Hlller at sec
ond and Tom Haller behind
the plate. -
Will Start Ford
The Yankees start a new
regime under Ralph Houk,
who replaces the eminently
successful Casey Stengel. Ole
Case guided the club to 10
pennants and 7 world cham
pionships during the past 12
seasons.
Houk steals a page from the
old manager's book by starting
the craftey Ford, 12-9 last
season, In the opener against
the transplanted Minnesota
Twins at New York. Pedro
Ramos (11-18) Is Minnesota's
choice.-
The Los Angeles Angels,
the other of the new clubs in
the expanded 10-team AL,
take wing against the Orioles
at Baltimore. In other AL
games, the Detroit Tigers host
the Cleveland Indians, and
the Boston Red Sox entertain
the Kansas City A's. Washing
ton and Chicago are idle.
: The Los Angeles Dodgers,
picked by many to win the
NL pennant, are expected to
draw the largest home crowd
when they take on the Phila
delphia Phillies In Tuesday's
only night game. A crowd of
about 50,000 should be on
hand when Don Drysdale 15-
14 opposes the veteran Robin
Roberts 12-16. :
In other NL games, the Mil
waukee Braves entertain the
St. Louis Cardinals and the
Chicago Cubs, under "head
coach" Vedie Himsl, meet the
Reds at Cincinnati. The
Braves-Cards game pits last
season's only two 21 game
winners, Spahn starting for
Milwaukee and Ernie Broglio
for St. Louis.

were halfway to hockey's most
prized ' trophy, the Stanley
Cup, today and new hard
hitting tactics might be

The Black Hawks blasted
three goals In six minutes and
23 seconds to trip the De
troit Red Wings, 3-1, and take
a 2-to-l lead In games in their
best-of-seven series.
It wasn't as much the scor
ing outbursts as the way the
team played that brought
cheers from coach Rudy Pilous
and General Manager Tommy
Ivan. .
"We played the way we're
capable of playing,"-,, Pilous
said,, "and the way they like
to play. I think the speed of
Bobby Hull, Red Hay and
Murray Balfour will offset
Detroit's speed in Alex Del-
vecchio, Vic Stasiuk and Gor

on Redwood City harbor. The

did the trick for Player. Ear

seven which seemed it would
keep him from becoming the
first foreign golfer ever to
win the Masters.
Had Faltering moments
For Player, too, had his
faltering, human moments on
the back nine of the par 33-36
-72, 6,980-yard Masters
course.
He was short on his ap
proach and bogeyed the 10th
hole. He settled down and
matched par for the next two
holes". '
Disaster overtook him on
the 475-yard par five 13th. He
put his tee shot into the trees
and decided to try to hit the
ball through the narrow open
ing across a creek. But the
ball plopped into the water
for a stroke penalty. Lying
three, he hit his approach too
strong and it was 30 feet
above the cup. He proceeded
to three-put-the only time his
putter tailed him in the bright
sunshine and wind.
