Identity, or anything about its
life history. All they are in
terested in is how many fish
they can catch, , with a white
grub on the hook.
To the gardener, the white
grub means a certain amount
of trouble, depending on the
total number and kind. I They,
the grubs, eventually will
turn into beetles or moths. In
the transition period, under
ground,: the grub will build
about itself, , a crude white
web or cocoon of sorts which
will be strengthened with bits
of chewed up leaves and dirt.
Then it will go to sleep and a
few. weeks later, will emerge
from the earth as a beetle.
Comes From Grub ..'
The Japanese beetle comes
from a grub that looks a great
deal, like others of like nature.
and in assorted sizes. The
large, white : grUbs are the
forerunners of the so-called
stag beetle. They all hatch
from eggs," The larvae ' Im
mediately buries , itself deep
in the earth. As . the season
progresses and it grows larg
er, it will move slowly toward
the surface, eating as it goes,
The skin that covers the rear
end of the body is very thin
and transparent, and shows a
dark material within, which
actually Is earth the grub has
swallowed. From, the soil is
digested the , organic matter
that fattens the grub,, , v j
At different stages of its
development, the 'grub stops
eating for intervals, curls up
In a ball to rest. When feed
ing, or moving near the sur
face, they fall prey to hungry
birds, who sit perfectly still
on the ground and listen for
the worm-stirrings under their
feet.
Underneath the fore part
of the grub's body are six
legs, which later will be the
legs of the adult beetle. There
are no legs on the rear end.

ged along, like a trailer.
Along the sides of the body
are dark spots, that look like
portholes in a ship. i
These will later become
breathing tubes' In the adult,

oped head, that appears to be
attached . to a . short stubby
neck. The grub has two bright
little eyes, and a strong mouth
with powerful cutting jaws.v
If the white grub escapes
his 'three.' greatest , enemies,
birds, the industrious garden
er or the fisherman; It will
stuff Its cream colored body
as full of food as a drum, go
to sleep and awake later to
crawl from the earth as a
hard shelled- beetle - a mem
ber of the most numerous
family of insects on the face
