Technicians Said
Leaving Cuba

heading for home, disgusted
with the inefficiency of Pre
mier Fidel Castro's govern
ment.
Seven aviation Instructors
from Red Czechoslovakia left
Monday, telling friends they
had found it Impossible to
work under the "inefficient
direction" of the Castroltes. ;
A dozen other Czech flying
Instructors left some time ago.
Another group of Czechs as
signed as advisers to the Na
tional Bank of Foreign Com
merce left recently, saying
they could not work with the
"undisciplined Cubans."
A Russian team overseeing
the construction of a cement
factory near Matanzas pulled
out without explanation, leav
ing the job half done.
Duties Unclear
The exact duties of the avia
tion instructors : never had
been made Clear, although
their presence -was linked
with reports that Russian Mig
jets are being assembled at
San Julian alrbase In western
Cuba. ' ,
These reports have never
been confirmed, and no Soviet
jets have been sighted In
flight. ; "
Foes of the Castro regime
started a S5 million fire wed
nesday at the nationalized
Hershey sugar mill, burning
out one of Cuba's biggest su
gar refineries and a ware-
house containing nearly 14,000
tons of bagged sugar.
: Destruction of the sugar
alone accounted for $1.6 mil
lion of the loss. A total of
279,096 100-pound bags of
sugar had been crammed into
the warehouse, which was de
signed to hold, only 250,000
bags.
Observers said the overload
Indicates the difficulty the
Castroltes are having in dis
posing of the current sugar
crop.
Before the government took
it over, the Hershey mill be
longed to refugee Cuban sugar
tycoon, Julio Lobo. So far as
is known, it had no connec
tion with the American choco
late company.
Numerous canefield fires
were reported Wednesday in
Las villas Province. It ap
peared some of them had been
set by sugar workers angered
by the recent reduction of
their wages, while others were
believed to have been set by
political opponents of the
regime.
McCann Arrives
In Hong Kong

munist China. Doctors sped

. A doctor said the 60-year-old
McCann was in "extreme
ly grave" condition.
A U.S. Air Force transport
stood ready to fly him back
to the United States with his
wife, Flora, when and if doc
, tors felt he could risk the
trip. His three1 children and
six grandchildren were wait
ing to see him in California.
It was obvious McCann had
suffered on the 1,100-mile trip
by plane, train and ambulance
from. Tientsin to Hong Kong.
His wife was by his side all
the way.
Tears flowed down the frail
man's hollow cheeks as three
male and two female Chinese
Red Cross attendants carried
him on a stretcher ud to with-
' in five feet of the border at
Lowu Station.
' He was shifted there to a
British Red Cross stretcher
and carried across to an am
bulance waiting on the Hong
Kong side.
McCann grimaced in pain
during the transfer and as he
crossed the border Mrs.-McCann
burst Into tears with
him.
Neither of the McCanns
would speak to newsmen.
The ambulance had to keep
its speed down to 15 miles an
hour to prevent jostling Mc
Cann on its trip over winding
mountain roads to St. The
resa's Hospital.
