The increasing demand for

the fact that a doctoral pro

Centralized Power
By Administration
Discussed by Durno
If th people of this coun
try follow. President Kennedy
and, his apostles, they ar go
' big to be living in a planned
economy , and a regimented
' democracy, Oregon Congress-
nun Edwin R, Durno declared
yesterday In a talk to Med
tord Kiwanis club. - .'-
' "If you do not' bellev In
: it', get out and get busy: if
, yflu believe in it, work for it,"'
the representative from Ore-
: son's fourth congressional dis
trict advised. ; , .
.The problem, according ; 4b
the Medford physician and
. surgeon, is "do you want the
federal government to do it
for you" or can ' state and
local governments serve ' best
.on local matters. ,
The present administration
wants centralized power, Dur
no stated. He reported that
Congress Is supporting Ken
nedy 100 per cent in inter
naional affairs. Noting' the
necessity 'for rapid decisions,
it has extended to the execu
tive branch wide and discre
tionary powers.
St Sam Urgency . -
The administration, Durno
aid, sees' the same urgency
and the same necessity tor
a hjgh degree of central con
trol, in domestic affairs as It
aees in the field of foreign
affairs.
Be spoke of a "demand for
. power."
Telling of the paradox In
this country of having more
people employed but more un
employment than ever before.
Durno pointed to "cheap two-
: bit and four-bit labor over-
. seas" as a cause of a serious
problem to this country's
economy. "We have won the
war and lost the peace," the
congressman asserted.
He mentioned th funds
poured abroad for reconstruc
tion of the economies of war
torn countries, and the send
ing of gold abroad now to
establish foreign subsidiares
with which businesses in this
country cannot compete.
At Much Attention '
, "This Is indeed a serious
- problem," Durno said. He ex
pressed the feeling that re
ciprocal trade matters, sched
uled for review next year In
.' Washington, D.C., will get as
much attention .as other im
portant issues.
Addressing Kiwanians at
their noon luncheon at Rogue
Valley Country club, Durno
assured them that "there Is
no gap so far as the destruc
tive capacity of our military
forces,". He stated, also, that
"Cold War" Is Just as much a
war today as the "Hot War"
was. ,
The congressman staled, "I
think my version of the Dunes
Is the correct one." He spoke
of the national shorelandt bill
he plans to introduce for the
Oregon Dunes as an alternate
to the bill, he opposes, sub
mitted by Oregon Senator
Maurlne Neuberger for a na-i
tional seashore park.
Provide Cooperation ,
.The shoreland would be
within national forest land,
ane weuld be admlnUtered by
the U.S. forest service. There
would be no condemnation of
property. Durno's bill would
provide cooperation between
State parks and the present
private landowners in . de
veloping recreation area.
- 'Durno maintained that the
shorelandt possess scenic and
wonderful recreational value
Concerning reports that the
congressman had downgraded
the - scenic: and--recreational
qualities of the land, Durno
denied that he had done so
and said that he had been
quoted out of context.
He reported that ; he had
stated that the Dunes did not
match the scenic grandeur of
Crater .lake and other nation
al parks. : y ;
Discussing his vote In op
position to President Ken
nedy's, minimum wag bill,
which was defeated by one
vote, Durno pointed out that
the 186 to 185 vote was far
short of the 437 total mem
bership of the House of Rep
resentatives, He reported 45
Democrats stayed in the ante
room because, they, did not
wish to vote against the ad
ministration. , . , ' i

there are three importanl
forces in the stock market to
day: . ; -
-Investors who believe thai
the new administration will
not only bring about a recov
ery In business but will also
accelerate the annual econom
ic growth of the nation on a
long-term basis. '
Investors, lacking faith in
the administration but buying
stocks as a hedge because they
fear large-scale inflation..
-Institutions with large
amounts of money that must
be invested who are forced
into the stock market as it
continues to rise rather than
risk investing at still higher
prices, -
' Poole says this situation is
'.'undeniably dangerous, yet
one can scarcely expect a de
cline in stock prices ' until
there is a weakening of at
least two of these -factors. '
Reynolds & Co. says with all
due respect to the impressive
accomplishments of its man
agement team, it believes
profit-taking in Technical Op

lowing the .stock's spectacular
rise in recent-months.
Bache & Co. says that al
though Maytag, which the
house has recommended sev

favorite in the appliance field,
the shares of Whirlpool Corp.
also deserve attention, particu
larly for long-term accounts.
