posit has been known for 45
-years or more. During opera
tion of the Blue Ledge copper
mine in the area during World
War I, owners of the mine
started a lime kiln for smelt
ing ore,' but the process was
abandoned. Until now the cal
elte was not marketable, c A
vein of the lime deposit can
' be seen running through the
bed of the Applegate river.
Local sources said the Ougen

the Blue Ledge mine, also
owned the area of the ealcite
deposit at that time.
