Before you set out, look over your maps
carefully to determine whether a free su
perhighway will serve you as well as a
toll road will. '
Sustained high-speed driving is differ
ent than your normal daily stint behind '
the wheel. Keep pace with traffic, neither
much faster nor slower. To stay alert, eat
lightly. Stop for a breather after the first
three hours of travel and every 100
miles thereafter. The respite will benefit
the driver and everyone in the car.
How far should you drive? Set a daily
limit of 450 miles at the most Driving at
high speed is one thing, but driving at
high speed when tired is another.
To increase your mileage, gas consump
tion, and safety, travel when highway
traffic is lightest.. Statistics show that Sat
urday is the week's worst day for acci
dents and Sunday the second worst.
Pick a weekday, any weekday, and start
early say at 7 a.m., before the local rush
hour begins. The prettiest, most inspiring
hour of day is morning twilight. Stop
early, too, especially before evening twi
light; the shadows become deceptive and
tricky after a day behind the wheel.
Now we can travel the lesser roads in
confidence, for there are none of the dirt
surfaced, unmarked paths the early mo
torists were forced to use. And here is the
last refuge of the genuine tourist, who
proceeds in his unhurried way.
This is the way to utilize your car as a
vacation vehicle; to scout the country for
yourself and discover friendly communi
ties; to explore the lesser-known national
monuments and state parks, locating out
standing areas which still give you the
sense of finding something new.
For the real sport of touring, think of
the pursuit of the open road as part of the
. vacation experience; moderate your speed
and enjoy the countryside, its landscape,
villages, and architecture. These are the
hidden glories of America that ask to be
seen and appreciated.
