Woman Goes Into
Red China To Seek
Release of Husband

na tonight to see her Impris
oned husband, possibly for the
last time. .,
Shortly before she crossed
the Sino-Brltish border, Mrs.
Robert E. McCann snid she
would plead with leaders of
the Red regime to permit her
to . take her cancer-stricken
husband back to their home In
Pasadena, Calif. 1

McCann, who was reported
dying in a Shanghai prison,
was arrested in Tientsin, Chi
na, June 14, 1051, and sen
tenced to serve IS years in
prison as a "spy."
His worried wife, . trying
bard to retain her composure,
said: "I'm very satisfied. I've
waited for nine years. Now I
feel I can do something."
Mrs. McCann said she did
I
not know how long she would
stay In Communist China. She
added she did not know how
serious her husband's illness
was, but that she had been
informed that he cannot live
very long.
"But they (the Communist
Chinese) can be wrong," she
said. The distraught woman
turned around once and waved
weakly at the American Con
sulate and International Red
Cross officials before vanish
ing Into the dark night into
Communist Chinese territory.
Worry Evident
It was believed she was be
ing met on the other side of
Communist otficials.
Up to the last minute, Mrs.
McCann tried hard to sound
cheerful and optimistic, but it
was evident she was worried.
Last Sunday, Mrs. McCann
refused to talk with newsmen
because she feared she would

home early today.
Authorities said eight bodies
were found in the ruins of the
home and officers were
searching for others. Cause of
the fire was not known.
