Japan Plans Ambitious
Atomic Power Program
Tokyo -WPII- Japan, which
already had plugged virtually
every available river with
hydroelectric dams, will turn
to nuclear energy for part of
its electric power supply.
And, when the price is
right, Japan will launch nu
clear powered ships.
These predictions were re
vealed by the Japan Atomic
Energy Commission in an
nouncing its 20-yoar plan for
peaceful use of atomic en
ergy.
The Japanese AEC report
predicted the nation would
be producing from 7 lo 8.5
million kilowatts of electric
power utilizing nuclear en
ergy within 20 years. It said
the British Caldar Hall and
the U.S. light water-cooling
reactors recently installed at
Atomic Village north of To
kyo had sol the groundwork
for future expansion in peace
ful nuclear research.
The new plan also called on
Japanese schools and colleges
lo produce 10,000 scientists
and technicians in the next
decade lo provide a founda
tion of knowledge for opera
tion of nuclear projects.
Plan Outdated
The Japanese AEC said a
long range nuclear energy
plan adopted in lnsti had be
come outdated by rapid
changes in nuclear research
and technology.
Major points made includ
ed: -Japan would construct its
first domestically produced
nuclear powered ship by
1008-70.
-Five nuclear reactors now
installed or planned will pro
duce aboul one million kilo
watts of electricity by 1970.
During the second 10 - year
period, total oulpul will in
crease by 6-7.5 million kilo-
walls. This was based on the
assumption thai nuclear pow
er would cosl less than fuel
oil by then.
Japan will continue lo im
port nuclear fuel for 10 years.
Beginning about 1970 the
government hoped to turn to
Plutonium and in the last five
years of the second 10-year
stage achieve domestic pro
d u c 1 1 o n of concentrated
uranium.
-The AEC will increase iso

obtain wide - angle coverage,
came up at long last with a
wide-angle model of its 2'4 x
2' i twin-lens reflex. This
newest addition to the Rollcl
family has a 55mm F4 Zeiss
Distagon lens whose field of
view covers 71 degrees. The
wide-angle Rolleiflex is simi
lar, except for its lenses, to
the Telc-Rolleiflcx introduced
in 1959. Until thai model with
its lH5min telcpholo oplics
appeared, Rolleis were avail
able only with standard focal
lengths of 75 or 85mm. The
wide-angle camera, to be avail
able at retail by early May, is
priced at $:i:)D.90, same as the
Telc-Rollcl.
Accurate Readings
An unusual high-precision
expnsure meter was intro
duced by the lleilanri division
of Minneapolis - Honeywell.
This battery-powered instru
ment has an electronic am
plifying system to facilitate
accurate readings in very dim
light and features an optical
system of light-sensitive cle
ment that covers an angle of
only three degrees.
Called the Hciland Pontax
321, this meter resembles a
small, waist-level reflex cam
era. Light readings from small
subject areas at considerable
distances can be made with it
by viewing the subject on a
ground glass whose field of
view Is 21 degrees. The ex
tremely narrow 3-degree angle
covered by the light-sensitive
element makes possible such
feats as taking an exact light

tope production for research
and development in basic
science, medicine, biology,
agriculture and industry.
-A coordinated research
program will be worked out
with Japanese schools and
colleges lo further the use
of nuclear energy for peace
ful purpuses. One issue to be
worked out was disposal of
Plutonium waste.
Financial Aid
-The AEC also called on the
government lo grant financial
aid in such "trail blazers" as
launching a nuclear - powered
ship and in developing wider
uses for nuclear energy.
The report said the 20-year
plan was divided into Iwo
parts: A 10-yoar development
stage and a 10-year utiliza
tion stage. It also noted Ihe
need for tightening security
with regard to nuclear policy.
Farm Managers,
Aopraisers To Meet
Corvallis - Farm managers
and rural appraisers from
throughout Oregon will meet
in Corvallis March 24 to re
view latest trends in agricul
tural financing and farm land
appraising, according to Dr.
Granl E. Blanch, agricultural
economist al Oregon State imi-
versity.
This will be the firsl annual
meeting of Ihe Oregon Society
of Farm Managers and Rural
Appraisers, Blanch said. The
meeting will open al 8:30
in the Memorial Union build
ing on the OSU campus.
Don J. Mason, Salem, is
president of the society.
Opening speaker will be
Carrol W. Wright, Berkeley,
Calif., who will discuss the
theory and application of the
capitalization rate in deter
mining farm values. Charles
Mack, chairman or the ore-
gon stale lax commission, will
report on property tax Irends.
New ideas being used in
farm buildings today will be
explained lo the group by
Leroy Bonnicksen, OSU agri
cultural engineer. Charles R.

can be used in closcup pho

useful In color work.
The meter is calibrated for
ASA film speeds from 3 to

speeds from long lime ex
posures to J 4000th second. II
is designed only for measur
ing reflected light, and has
two sensitivity ranges for
high or low light levels.
Power is supplied by two 1 .3
volt mercury batteries and
one 22.5-voll dry cell. The
average amateur is not likely
to need such a precise meter,
but advanced workers and
professionals may find many
uses for 11. List price, with
batteries and leather case, is
S79.50.
Unused Projector
Bell & Howell had perhaps
the most unusual slide pro
jector at the exhibition n
projector that can be focused
and operated by ultra - sonic
sound waves at distances of
more than 40 feet. Called the
Tele-sonic wireless remote
projector, it has two minia
ture transmitters that vibrate
like tuning forks at frequen
cies too high - pitched to be
heard. One, transmitting at
38.500 cycles per second, con
trols the lens focusing; the
other, at 40,000 cycles, acti
vates the slide changing
mechanism. Since the con
troller has no wires or other
physical connection to the pro
jector, the operator can move
about at will. With 500-wait
lamp and 4-inch F'3.5 lens,
Ihe projector is available now
al a suggested list price of
$269.95.

World War II brought even
sharper changes in travel.
