Small Worlds
Around Us
By Lynn M. Watkins
(Iteeliter and Tribune syndicate
1961)
Portuguese Man-o-wor
And Its Jolly 'Crew'
The story of the Portuguese
man-o-war Is not a single indi
vidual,- rather It is a small
community of animals; a col
ony o polyps living together
for their mutual good. Each
polyp has its own function to
perform, for the good of the
others. These slightly differ
ent animals form the "crew"
of this little sailing boat that
bobs majestically over the
waves of the sea; sailing a pre
scribed course, and with the
bility to come up into the
wind, or slack off its "sail"
and run with it.
The "sail" of the little ship
Is a translucent, elongated
bladder, filled with gas, and
brilliantly colored with blue,
purple, or even crimson, tint
ed delicately with pink, like
the edge of a summer sunset.
On clear, sunny days, when
the warm waters of tropic
are cairn, thousands of
these "sails" can be seen, bob
bing gently with the surge of
small waves, and drifting with
the wind.
Each "snil" is 4 or 8 inches
long, standing about the same
height above the water s sur
face. If there are many in
sight at a time, a careful ob
server notices they are not all
going the same way. Some
may even be quartering
against the wind.
Forgetting for a moment,
that the "crew" of the craft
is sailing by direction, the un-
romantic scientist says the
Portuguese man-o-war has
dropped down the long tenta
cles that are attached to the
under part of the sail and their
weight causes the little "ship"
to come about.
These tentacles, or stream
ers, may hang several leet
under the animal, and are un
der direct control of the crea
ture. At their maximum ex
tension they act much the
same as a sea-ancnor, ana

keep the man-o-war from
drifting too rapidly, or may
even prevent it from being
washed ashore.
Stinging Cells
Each of these long tentacles
is equipped with rows of
stinging cells that paralyze
anything that touches them.
They ensnare and kill small
fish, and hold the victim until
the tentacle retracts and
brings the fish into what an
swers for a mouth in this
strange, composite creature.
The mouth, or more rightly
the "absorber" is on the un
derside of the bladder, or sail.
In the curtain formed by these
streamers, or tentacles, lives a
tiny fish that ignores the sting
ing cells. Probably he acts as
a natural lure to attract small
fish within reach of the sting
ing cells.
In payment for this service
the man-o-war fish picks up
the crumbs that fall from his
table. He lives dangerously;
his must be a life of constant
Vigilance.
One second carelessness or
a miscalculation in move
ment, could plunge him into
the entangling strands, and
could completely paralyze
him. This liny fish must be
very careful, or very stupid;
one mistake and he is very
dead.
