SPRING POPS OUT Jenny Peterson, a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John C. Peterson of Columbia, Mo,, plays with
crocuses popping out ahead of the grass. These hardy signs
of spring don't seem io mind the severe weather which has
been more common than this bright day, but burst into
bright yellow and purple blooms every time the sun shines.

Ashland Chamber
Receives Requests
For Information
Ashland-As of Monday, the
Ashland Chamber of Com
merce had received 284 re
quests for information about
Ashland.
The Ashland chamber has
joined chambers in Medford,
Grants Pass and Illinois Val
ley in sponsoring advertise
ments in Sunset and West
ways magazines. The Jackson
and Josephine county courts
are helping to finance the
costs. Velma Jones, Ashland
chamber secreiary, reports in
formation requests ha'e been
coming in as fast as she can
asmver them.
The bright note, she indi
cates, is that between 5 and
10 per cent of Hie inquiries
have been asking about Ash
land, as a permanent place to
live. Such questioning as
"What about permanent resi
dences?" and "How's the cli
mate?" are being answered
frequently.
Thirty-tour motor clubs
from aii paris of the country
have asked for brochures on
Ashland. They include the
Chicago Motor club, Automo
bile Association of Michigan,
ikMMMkt Sacramento-San Francisco

Austin Minnesota Motor club,
National Motor club of Dallas,
Tex,, and British Columbia
Auto association.
Unusual Questions
Some inquiries have been
along unusual lines. A Pasa
dena, Calif., man wrote "Have
camper. Overnight parking?"
A Canoga Park, Calif., resi
dent requested information on
rock collecting possibilities.
Another California citizen in
quired about gold panning.
The prize question io date was
from a resident of Bellfiower,
Calif,, who asked, "Could you
send me information on past
beauty contests in Ashland?"
However, most requests
have been less unusual. Camp
ing facilities, hiking areas,
trailer accommodations, fish
ing prospects, local industry
and golf courses are areas at
tracting interest.
Points of scenic and histor
ical interest also attract ques
tions. One man sounded like
he was ready to pick tip and
leave California as soon as
possible. He asked, "What are
plane and train fares to your
city?"
' From Juehitepee, Mexico,
came tiie inquiry "Farm land
for sale?"
Every one of the 284 in
quiries has been answered,
Mrs. Jones says. Persons re
questing information receive
a brochure on Ashland outlin
ing the city's history, progress
and current condition. Other
brochures on accommodations
and recreational facilities are
sent if requested. Many inqui
ries have to be answered by a
persona! letter. The chamber
has hired additional office
help to meet the demand.
Where will it end? Who
knows. Things will be hum
ming in the Ashland Chamber
of Commerce office for some
time if the current number o
questions continues.

Once again the Christian
world finds itself in the season
of Lent- This seasnn of retire
ment and nrayr has its origin
in the 40 days of fasSing and
eominisnksn with Gad our Lord
communion which God our
Lurd experienced in the wild
erness at the beginning of His
ministry. What He did there
is what we are railed upon to
do in our Lent, It is a time si
soul-searching and realign
ment of our lives in fellow
ship wish God and obedience
to Ills will.
We speak of She 40 days as
His temptation and so it w-.
So Lent is tor all ot iis. The
Evil One tried to get oar Lord
to accept easier, more wssrisi;
methods, in the ministry thai
lay ahead of Him, "Give them
free bread" he said, "or Jiurp
off high wails and not he
hurt." The people will ioie ,
and follow5. After all, Jesus
wanted the world and sue
Devil offered to give it to 11 ;c
with aii Ms kingdoms ana the
glories of them. But it w.isi',.1
still be the world and the way
of peace and holiness He came
to brh?g would never come.
This problem does r r.
change- We dream of b-lt-r
Shiiigs for onr personal lives
and the live of She wur r.
arouiid us. Our Lessf bids us
to take stock and examine
both our motives and per
formances, Gur present day
world lays great demands
upon us for the careful con
sideration of these things.
How are we going to solve
the difficulties posed by god
less ideologies, race tensions;
and class and national strife?;
Are we going to go on the
world s way and fail, or are
we going to take the way of
holiness and sacrifice by
which atone tho kingdoms of
this world can be lifted io the
Kingdom of God and His
Christ?
