Many Advised To
Leave Los Angeles
Los Angek'S - IUP1) - More
than 10,000 persons have been
advised by doctors since 1956
to leave Los Angeles because
of the effects of smog on their
health.
About 2,500 took the advice
last year alone.
That information was given
to the county board of super
visors Thursday by Dr. Fran
cis M, Pottenger Jr., chairman
of the Air Pollution Commit
tee of the County Medical as
sociation. Pottenger said the statistics
were gathered from question
naires sent out to 9,000 doe
tors. About 60 per cent of the
doctors returned the forms
with information.
Pottenger was one of four
physicians who spoke with the
supervisors in deliberations
on a smog control bill.
Sabin To Testify
On Oral Vaccine
Washington - 0IP1I - House
investigators planned to ask
Dr. Albert Sabin today wheth
er American drug companies
have been dragging their feet
in getting his new oral polio
vaccine to the public.
The Public Health Service
said Thursday it may be up to
six months before the new
vaccine is available even
though it has potential ad
vantages over the present
S a 1 k vaccine by giving
"quicker, possibly longer-lasting
immunity."
Chairman Kenneth A. Rob
erts of the House health sub
committee said it looked to
him like "a question of getting
someone to make it."

Spring Pig Crop
To Be Above 1960
Washington TUPII The Ag
riculture Department esti
mates the 1961 spring pig
crop in 10 corn belt states
will be about 8 per cent above
the 1960 level.
The department's Crop Re
porting Board made no actual
forecast of pig production, but
it reported that the number of
sows bearing pigs in Decem
ber through May will be 5,
524,000 head. This is 8 per
cent above 1960, but 9 per
cent below the 1950-59 aver
age. Spring pigs go to market as
pork products in the fall and
winter. The 10 states covered
in the report normally pro
duce aeout 75 per cent of the
nation's hogs.

POLIO PILLS HARMLESS
Washington . IUPD The
U. S. Public Health Service
informed House investigators
Thursday that the Russian's
have quit worrying about their
people getting an overdose
of the new oral polio vaccine.
It seems some children sot
hold of some of the candy-
type pills and gobbled down
300 of them. Medical studies
showed they suffered no ill
effects other than "intestinal
upset."
