At University
Eugene A Canadian poet
and English professor will
teach creative writing as a
visiting professor in the Uni
versity of Oregon's English;
department during spring !
term. i
He is A.JSarle Birncy, pro
fessor of English in the Uni-!
versity of British Columbia,
Vancouver, B.C.
This will not be Birney's
first teaching experience in
this country. In 1927-30 he
was a teaching fellow at the i
University of California and
from 1930-32 and from 1933
34 he was an English instruc
tor at the University of Utah.
Between the two sessions he
was at the University of Tor
onto, where he returned in
1936.
Birncy went to England;
under a Royal Society of Ca
nada Travelling Fellowship
from 1934-36. Following this
he took a position as assistant
professor at Toronto. He went
to the University of British
Columbia in 1946. Since that
time he has held two fellow
ships which took him over
seas. The first of these was in
1953 when he went to France
under a Canadian Govern
ment Overseas Fellowship.
Again in 1958-59 he was in
England under the Nuffield
Foundation Fellowship.
Giving special lectures,
poetry readings and short
courses in creative writing
have also been a part of Bir
ney's work. He is a writer of
note with four books of
poetry, two novels, and many
articles published under his
name.
In 1952, Birncy received
the Barestone Poetry Award.
He won the Lome Pierce
Medal for Literature in 1953.

ney received his masters and
doctor of philosophy degrees
from the University of I
