Friendship Is
Popular Program

; rare man, indeed, who will
: take a caravan of foreign col
lege students on his honey
moon.
That is just what Harry
Morgan did as one of the
things which snowballed into
an international project-that
won Morgan an award as one
of the 10 outstanding young
men in the United States.
Morgan, 26, was specifically
cited for his "Ambassadors
for Friendship" program, a
project which seeks to teach
foreign students in the United
States about American ways
of life.
When the United Slates Jun
ior Chamber of Commerce
gave Morgan his award, they
called him "a pioneer in people-to-people
diplomacy with
our neighbors abroad."
Ambassadors for Friendship
took shape in Morgan's mind
when he hitch-hiked across
Holland in 1953, just after
thousands had been left home
less by floods.
"I learned there that under
standing comes from friend
ship," he said.
Back in the United States
Morgan enlisted in the Air
Force. He raised funds to
bring a few foreign students
to America.
The first participants in the
program returned home de
lighted with the United States. -Morgan
returned to Rutgers
University after service and
was graduated last June.
Last summer, Morgan began
in earnest his attempt to reach
50,000 foreign students with
his program.
Caravan
Financed by 51 shares sold
throughout the country, Mor
gan and internationally mind
ed Macalester College stu
dents here financed a caravan
of station wagons in which
the young leader, his bride
of one week, and eight foreign
students set out to tour the
United States.
Although the trip's purpose
was to teach the students,
Morgan's person-to-person idea
worked both ways and Ameri
cans learned as well.
In one small Midwestern
town, an elderly woman ap
proached an extremely intelli
gent African student and ask
ed, "Is it true that your people
still eat missionaries?"
None of Morgan's group was
much surprised when a wait
ress asked for orders that
night and the young man an
swered: "One missionary."
Morgan currently is serving
as special assistant to the
president at Macalester, using
the college as a headquarters
and a testing ground for his
ambassadors project.
Last year, five groups tour
ed the nation. In 1961 Morgan
hopes to send about a dozen
groups.
Morgan's home on the col
lege campus is dubbed "Inter
national House." It is a club
house-meeting hall for Macal
cster's 50 foreign students.
Each Tuesday, the Morgan's
entertain the foreign students
with a potluck supper.
Numerous Speeches
Between these extra-curricular
activities and his daily
tasks, Morgan gives numerous
speeches on the ambassadors
program and internationalism.
In June, "Ambassadors for
Friendship" will mark its
fifth birthday, with greetings
expected from former students
in Austria. Denmark, West
Germany, France. Holland,
Italy, Sweden and Switzer
land. His latest venture would
bring 12 young newspapermen
from 12 different countries
to Macalester for a year of
American studies.
"We'll try to select the fu
ture editors, who some day
will be molding public opin
ion in Asia, Africa and the
other countries and tell them
the true American story,"
Morgan said.
He already has raised about
$40,000 lo finance the pro
gram, by selling his idea to
company presidents, publish
ers and others throughout the
" country.
Nuclear Device
On Crashed Bomber
Sacramento, Calif. -HIPD- A
B52 jet bomber carrying a
nuclear weapon crashed in
flames about 40 miles north of
Sacramento Tuesday. The only
fatality was an Air Force fire
man not on the plane.
M Sgt. Lawrence T. Gill
ham of Beale Air Force Base
was killed when the fire truck
he was driving crashed en
route to the scene.
The eight men aboard the
S8 million bomber parachuted
from the crippled craft. None
was seriously injured.
Air Force officials, who
said there was no danger of a
nuclear explosion, sealed off
the area and sent in decon
tamination workers to elimi
nate any possible danger from
radiation.
