Negotiators Work to Settle
Ship Cargo Handling Dispute

Negotiators worKea to sei-
tie a cargo handling dispute
that tied ud freight operations
on three of the West Coast's
major ports and theralened to
spread to other cities in an
inter-union work wrangle.
With about 4,000 long
shoremen off the job in three
cities, the dispute threatened
to add to economic woes cre
ated by 300,000 persons al
ready out of work because of
recession in the areas.
The dispute broke out on
the Los Angeles and Long
Beach docks and developed
into a virtual waterfront shut
down in San Francisco. By
week's end picketing had not
yet spread to San Diego, al
though officials there tea red
a shutdown.
Set Off Tieups
Picket lines posted by the
Teamsters' union set off the
dock tieups. Members of the
International Longshoremen's
and Warehousemen's Union
were observing the picket
lines under a mutual agree
ment pact, although the two
unions appeared to be at cross
purposes in the dispute.
The teamsters posted pick
ets after being ordered by
their employers to stop mak
ing up freight loads on the
piers.
Employers contended that
under a mechanization agree
ment between the Pacific
Maritime association and the
ILWU, longshoremen are sup
posed to make up and take
down stacks of cargo.
The teamsters complained
that the agreement was cost
ing them work,
File Unfair Charges
The PMA filed unfair labor
practice charges against the
teamsters, charging that the
pickets violated the Taft-Hartley
act by trying to force
PMA members to assign the
work to the teamsters instead
of to longshoremen.
In response, the teamsters
filed an unfair labor prac
tices charge against the PMA
and members.
Ralph Kennedy of Los An
geles, regional director of the
national labor relations board,
said investigators were as
signed to determine facts in
the case, but no hearing date
has been set.
Some trucking officials said
they feared the whole West
Coast would be Involved be
fore the dispute was settled.
Elsewhere, there were these

Fraternity: The Stanford
university chapter of (he Al
pha Tau Omega fraternity,
with strong backing from uni
versity president j. Wallace
Sterling and the state of Cal
ifornia, announced that it will
become an independent local
fraternity. The 71-yeur-oid
chapter was ousted by the
high council of the fraternity
in Chicago for accepting four
Jewish students as members
Shortly after the announce
ment from Chicago, the Cali
fornia Attorney General's of
fice said it would ask the Uni
versity of California and the
slate colleges to withdraw
recognition of local ATO
chapters.

Tentative Plans

Tentative plans for a 50-lot
subdivision in north Medford
were approved by the Med
ford city planning commission
at its meeting Thursday night.
The subdivision is planned
by Roy Wilkes and will be
called the Brookhurst addi
tion. Wilkes has already de
veloped the Brookhurst sub
division which lies to the
north of the new area.
Approval of the tentative
plat means Wilkes is free to
go ahead and develop the
area, unless in his final plans
he should depart from his pre
liminary plans in the design
of the subdivision.

will be located directly east of
Corona ave., in an area be
tween Morrow rd. and Grand
ave. included in the subdivi
sion will be an extension east
of Johnson St., and two new
streets - Miracle and Gala
lanes.

Voters: More than 800,000
Caiifornians who failed to cast,
ballots in the presidential elec
tion last November have been
dropped from voting lists. Sec
retary of Slate Jordan said
this was done in accordance
with a law passed in 1959. He
said the state's new registered
vole, as of the first of the
year, was 6,603,226, a drop
of 861,400 since the general
election.

To College Dean's List
Portland - Anne Matthews,
601 Dakota st., Medford, has
been named to the dean's list
of 31 women pledged by three
Lewis and Clark college so
rorities. Formal initiation will
follow a six-week pledge pe
riod.
Miss Matthews is wearing
the pledge pin of Delia Phi
Gamma sorority. She is a
freshmon liberal arts major
and the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Matthews.
Clowns' Humour
Ends in Lawsuit
Ciarksdale, Miss. - IUPD - A
woman who said she was em
barrassed, humiliated and in
jured by two grocery clowns
filed a $90,000 damage suit
against the grocery and two
food manufacturing firms, it
was announced Friday.
Lucille Lewis, 43, said the
clowns - hired by the store
to promote certain products -chased
her around the store
while other shoppers laughed.
She said she was hospitalized
for aggravation of a heart
ailment.
