Quick Thinking May Cause
Scrambled Handwriting

blustery month is as mild as this lion cub,

have only your poor hand
writing to blame.
If friends and relatives com
plain they never receive the
letters you claim you write,
there is a strong chance that
the postal employees could not
read your Sanskrit and dump
ed your mail Into the dead
letter files.
Illegible handwriting also
has been known to delay the
filling of department store or
ders and cause pharmacists to
misread doctors' prescriptions.
Handwriting cripples are so
numerous that the University
of Wisconsin has been con
ducting an extensive survey
under grants from the Parker
Pen Co. to try to straighten
out some of the kinks and
snarls in the average person's
script.
Until the early 20th Cen
tury, handwriting was an art
that was cultivated carefully
in schools and homes. The
first blow to legibility was the
widespread use of the type
writer. Then came the second,
when penmanship instruction
in public schools was dropped
as a depression money-saver.
Added to these blows, ac
cording to the University of
Wisconsin researchers, were
the introduction of several
basic handwriting systems. To
day, it is estimated, there are
about 19 different handwrit
ing systems, Instead of the
single Spencerian script of the
1900's and the "Palmer Meth
od" of the next few decades.
So-called progressive educa
tion brought the widspread
teaching of printing instead of
longhand to children, on the
theory it was easier to learn.
All these factors have added
up to a most horrifying jumble
of illegible words and num
bers, the Wisconsin research
ers discovered. They esti
mated that a million dollars a
week is lost by business and
industry in scrambled orders,
lost deliveries, clerical mis
takes and other forms of in
efficiency traceable to unread
able writing.
The Illinois Bell Telephone
Co. alone found it lost nearly
$50,000 a year because oper
ators had scribbled toll call
charges in hieroglyphic-.
Several department stores
have introduced experimental
classes In penmanship for em
ployees. Other companies have
issued orders to workers to
write legibly, or else. ,
The root of the trouble is
that people think much faster
than they can write. There
fore, the swifter a person is,
the worse his scrawl. College
professors and top executives
have been found to be the No.
1 offenders on the graphologi
cal scale.
Basic Tip
The average individual
thinks at the rate of about
250 words a minute. But he
cannot write faster than 25
words a minute and still read
what he has set down.

improve his handwriting, if he
really tries. Here are some
basic handwriting tips they
passed along:
-Test yourself to see if your
handwriting speed exceeds 25
words a minute. If It does,
slow down.
-Practice writing the trick
ier letters slowly. A, E, R, and
T are the most difficult to
write. Also practice with let
ters such as A, G and D to
make sure they are fully
closed.
-Watch for "twin" num
bers. The numerals 1 and 7
should not look anything
alike. Also beware of 3, 5 and
8, which often look alike
when written hurriedly.
-Sit properly when writing,
with shoulders slightly for
ward and hips back on the
seat. Face the desk squarely
with both forearms on it.
Keep both feet flat on the
floor. v-
-The paper should be slant
ed slightly. The Palm of the
writing hand should be down
and the wrist should be held
as flat as possible. Hold pencil
or pen an inch above the
point.
-Never press down while
writing. Hold the pen or pen
cil jignuy or me writing will
be cramped.
A few minutes a day of such
practice may bring dramatic
results. Even you, at lone last.
may be able to read your own
writing!
