universities Thursday night in
urging the legislature to keep
faculty salaries at a. competi
tive level by granting a .19
por cent increase over two
years.
- That Is about 3 per cent
more than Gov. Mark Hatfield
has proposed.
The testimony was deliver
ed before a session of the
Joint Ways and Means Com
mittee, which is considering
the proposed salary hikes.
.The increases they seek
would cost some $7 million
over the next biennium.

the AFL-CIO Executive Coun
cil meeting.
The council has promised
to rule on a request by the
stewardesses for a charter to
set up their own union apart
from the pilots.
' -The stewardesses contend
that they have no common
grounds with the pilots from
the standpoint of work re
quirements or a pay scale and
that they need an entirely
separate union program.

Journal Publishing Co,, which
owns the afternoon Capital
Journal and morning Oregon
Statesman newspapers.
Could B Amended
He said Oregon's system
works in a fair way for most
employers but could be
amended to Improve it for
both employers and em
ployees. Big companies might bene
fit under the bill but he said
he doubted if small firms
would, adding that three-way
is a "misnomer" because Ore
gon employers actually have
three choices now.
Labor contends that since
private insurance firms have
to make a profit, workmen's
compensation costs would go
up and benefits would shrink.
The bulk of labor's testimony
will come next week.

To Visit Pope John

Philip, would be welcomed
with all the pomp and page
antry of the Pope's court
when they arrive May 3. .
Buckingham Palace an
nounced in London Thursday
that the royal couple would
pay a courtesy call on Pope
John at the end of a trip to
Italy. The queen is the head
of the Protestant Church of
England which broke away
from the Roman Catholic
Church In the 16th Century.
Appoints Liaison Officer
The Church of England also
announced it had appointed
a liaison officer to the Vati
can, Canon Bernard Pawley,
This was believed a direct re
sult of the meeting last De
cember between the Pope and
Dr. Geoflrey Fisher, retiring
primate of the Church of
England.
Vatican - circles expressed
hope that the queen's visit
would not cause undue criti
cism from British Protestants
who have objected to similar
meetings in the past.
"It is only a courtesy call
but it is certain to strengthen
good ' relations," a Vatican
spokesman said,
The Vatican visit will be
the first by a British mon
arch since the late King
George V called on Pope Pius
XI in 1923. His predecessor,
King Edward VII, also visited
the Vatican.
Makes Previous Visit
The queen and her husband
visited the Vatican once be
fore in 1951 when she still
was a princess. They called
on Pope Pius XII.
As head of the British
Commonwealth, Queen Eliza
beth has many millions of
Roman Catholics among- her
subjects. The queen believes
it would be unthinkable to
slight their spiritual leader
despite the Protestant criti
cism the visit was expected to
provoke in Britain,
The National Union of
Protestants , and the Free
Church of Scotland openly
objected to Elizabeth's Vati
can visit in 1951 and also that
of Dr. Fisher, the Archbishop
of Canterbury, last year.

pending their return Tuesday
to Los Angeles.
It will be the first time the
Nixons have returned to Los
Angeles since last November
when Nixon was defeated by

large "welcome home" dinner
have been scheduled for Nix
on by his hometown area
friends. The welcome dinner
sponsored by the Greater Los
Angeles Press Club originally
was to have been held at the
Press Club but later was
changed to the larger Inter
national Ballroom at the Bev
erly Hilton Hotel because of
public demand for tickets.
