ford since about 640 B.C.
That is correct. If you add
the vears for which the firms
listed below hive been in
business here, you come up
with a grand total of 3,040
years.
We ran across this item, and
many others, while doing re
search for a recent article com
memorating Medford's com
Dletlon of 75 years as an in
corporated entity. Although
of questionable worth, w pass
a few of them along.
Here's another one.
Avarag Time
The average Medford firm
has been here for 28.14 years.
No one firm hits that figure
on the nose, but the M. C.
" Linlnger and Sons company
comes the closest with 29
years of service. .
Hubbard Brothers company
is the oldest, having been es
tablished here In 1864; and
the Thunderbird market is
the newest, having opened its
doors in January.
Also . , . According to the
' U.S. Bureau of Census there
were 686 retail outlets In
Jackson county In 1958. Of
these, 344 were In Medford..
Hlohi in Middle
Many of these- firms have
chosen not to advertise below,
but of those that did (nice
fellows), the California- Pa
cific Utilities company is right
in the middle of the list. (Now
how about that?)

one of our favorite television
bears.
The county has a census-
bureau population of 73,962,
Of these, 25,500 poor souls
comprise the county's labor
force, This means then that
only 35 per cent of the coun
ty's population Is eligible for
gainful employment, com
pared to the national average
of 40 per cent.
But, all is not lost.
This county also has more
youngsters, and oldsters, than
the average county. So if the
rest of the country will just
wait a few years until we can
get those children out on the
street corners selling ; Mall
Tribunes - we'll catch up.

And what has all this got to
do with Medford's 76th anni
versary? Not much - we'll
admit - so we'll get back to
the subject at hand.

J. S. Howard was apoplnted
postmaster here In 1884, a
cigar box proved to be a very
adequate post office?
Did you know (now that's
the wrong approach; let's try
it this way) - Would you like
to know that if Harry Wort
man Sr., hadn't lived in Rock-
ford, Ind., before coming to
Medford, Main st. wouldn't be
called Main St., nor Oakdale
ave. Oakdale ave.?
It's the truth. Mr. Wortman
must have wielded some in
fluence here when he was a
city councilman -in 1908, for
he requested mat sevenin si.
be renamed Main St., and
South J st. be renamed Oak
dale ave. - and he got his way.

It seems that In Rockford,
Mr. Wortman had a business
on Main it., and lived on Oak
dale ave., and he wanted the
same setup here.
Let's see - I think we have
room for one more. There are
so many that it's hard to
choose. Here we go.
Lewis Doren and Ida Cald
well were married here in
July 31, 1884 and thus be
came the first couple to be
married In Medford. One his
torical document we ran
across says, and we quote:
"One of the Crystal children
has the honor of being the
first child born in Medford."
Unfortunately, we are unable
to shed any more light on this
tidbit. , .' -

point out that the tale about
Jacksonville refusing to give
money to the Oregon and Cali
fornia railroadi which resulted
in the founding of Medford in
1883, is not based in fact.
We are told that although
this rumor persists, there is
another fairly reliable source
which claims that the railroad
never intended to go through

A reader might now ask,
"Well if you're no authority
on Medford and Jackson coun
ty history, then what in the
blankety-blank is your excuse
for relating all these worthless
facts and figures to us?"

Open Burning

Council unanimously adopted
Thursday an open-burning or
dinance aimed at breaking the
standstill in the $5.5 million
South Auditorium Urban Re
newal project.
The measure, passed with
the endorsement of business
and labor, provides for con
trolled burning with permits
issued by the Portland Fire
Marshal s office.
Work was halted at the
South Auditorium site when
the State Sanitary Authority
invoked a rule last month
banning open burning.

To Retire March 31

Judge James R. Bain, 70,
Portland, announced Thurs
day he was retiring effective
March 31.
Bain, who has served in
Multnomah county since 1945,
revealed his retirement to Sec
retary of State Howell Ap
pling, Jr. Bain filed a claim
with Appling for retirement
pay, which will total $541 a
month.

African Troops Sought for UN

The United Nations sought to
give Africans a larger voice
in their own affairs today by
seeking 3,500 African troops
to bolster the U. N. force in
the Congo.
Informed sources said sec
retary General Dag Hammar-
skjold had decided to ask the
African countries first tor tne
badly needed reinforcements.
If they do not come through,
he will turn to Asia next, they
said.
The U. N. force in the Con
go is being hit hard by with
drawals of more than 4,000
soldiers by several nations
who have condemned the op
eration. Hammarskjold has received
authority from his 18-natlon
advisory committee to try to
beef the force up to 20,000 by
getting 7,000 new men.

Manor Start With
Great Decisions
The activities program at
Rogue Valley Manor got off
to a promising start this week
when 35 men and women
took part in the first "Great
Decisions" discussion session
in the Manor's lecture room
on the ground floor, accord
ing to Administrator Walter
M. HigginS.
Less than 100 of the Manor
"family" has moved in to
date, Higglns said, and the
large enrollment in the dis
cussion group would seem to
indicate the anticipated high
cultural level of the. member

He also served as field sec

War II. A native of Switzer
land and an American citizen
since 1911, Jenney speaks
German and is in touch with
German leaders Of churches,
education, government and
the YMCA.
