Julie H Aly husband feels
lost without his brother.
Milton H She's just try
ing to break us up.
Julie H. I'm married four
years, have a two-year-old
baby, and now suddenly rea
lize that my 30-year-old hus
band is the biggest baby I
know. He ean't make a move
without consulting his older
brother. '
I knew they were very
close and I admired their re
lationship as a fine, brotherly
loyalty. From childhood up,
they slept in the same room,
went to the same school, and
are now partners in business.
But I had no idea that Mil
ton, as an adult and a mar
ried man, was so dependent
on his brother socially and
emotionally. I feel I'm mar
ried to a hyphenated person
named Milton - Alvin, even
though it's only Milton who
comes home each night.
My immediate problem is a
social one. We spent a pleas
ant evening at the new home
of a couple who happen to
know Alvin and his wife, too.
While there, Milton remarked
that Alvin would feel bad
over not being asked along,
and that we had all better,
keep mum about the visit.
The upshot? We must return
next month with Alvin and
wife, and pretend that it's our
first visit, to spare Alvin's
feelings! .
How can a wife grow close
to a husband who wants to
be 99 per cent brother?
Milton H. I can't under
stand what Julie has against
Alvin. He s never said a word
against her. In fact, he liked
her from the minute I intro
duced her to him, and was
glad I was marrying her.
I owe a great deal to Alvin'
and I don't think I can ever
do enough for him. He took
me into his business as an
equal partner, even though I
had nothing to offer but my
two hands and feet. Our
business is thriving. Both our
wives get a good allowance,
and Julie should be as grate
ful as I.
About this party coming up
next month that has Julie aH -burned
up, all I did was re
mind our host , to do some
thing he meant to do anyway.
They really wrnted Alv.ii and
his wife along that first lime,
and it was an oversight. And
since I can't bear to see Al
vin hurt, we cooked up this
little plan for us all to come
over together, and play

Under flowery protesta
tions of "brother-love, Mil
ton clings to an almost hys- ,
terlcal involvement with Al
vin. Breaking loose seems inv;
possible. And yet, for a suc
cessful marriage, it must be
done. Julie sees that he can
never be wholly hers, because
he is not even wholly him
self. To find himself, see him
self, and stand alone as i a
whole man, he may need the
detached aid of a guidance'
counselor. But he must be
helped to see that his nervous
solicitude for his older broth- .

healthy hunger. To satisfy it,
he is sacrificing his marriage
Julie has a hard row to
hoe. On the surface ope
might suggest that she en-"
dcavor to feed her husband's
ego so that he may find
greater satisfaction in the
husband-role, with less need
to play the hovering brother.
But it's harder to super
impose a new relationship on
an old than to start from
scratch. Milton came to Julie
"with strings attached," tied
to his brother. Evidently no
body has yet explained to
him (or else, he can't accept)
that marriage means "for
saking all others and cleaving
only unto thee."
This does not mean aband
oning Alvin. It merely calls
for a re-alignment of loyal
ties, in the order of their
claim upon his thoughts and
actions. In our society, llvs

Milton has two families,
the one he was born into, and
the one he was man enough
to found himself. The second
is his first responsibility. His
brother isn't. 1,1
